Īsā Al Masih: a Qur’anic disposition

In response to br. Mozer  G. inquiry  to understand, what exactly does the quran mean when he calls Jesus -messiah to me, here allow me to present a very brief summary on my musing on the subject.

Disclaimer: this is by no mean an authoritative exposition as I disqualify my self as a scholar.

Unlike in the hebrew bible, the Qur’an mentions only one Messiah,  this is a title: the Messiah or  al-Masīḥ المسيح in Arabic or  המשיח in hebrew. This title is mentioned  11 times in 9 different Qur’anic verses. I tend to believe although the designation of the definite article the Messiah it does not necessarily mean that the Qur’an implies that there was only one Messiah even though that Jesus (or Īsā in Arabic Qur’an) was the one special Messiah. The reason is the Qur’an set itself as the continuation of the earlier revelation from God, many of the Qur’anic stories and phrase are “recall”, as some scholars put it, of the major figures and narratives in the Hebrew Bible therefore it assumes its readers familiarity with previous scriptures so all the basic principles of its stories and terminology as well as their relationship had been set and enunciated.

Although the Qur’anic Messiah may share a few similarity with the Christian Messiah and with the Jewish one, it presents itself with some contrasting differences, I try to list here the attributes of the Qur’anic messiah:

  • Having been born of virginal conception, the Messiah did not have a father, he is only called after his mother, Īsā bin Maryam “Jesus the son of Mary” .
  • The Messiah was a miracle worker.
  • There are no mention in the Qur’an that the  Messiah was descendant from King David. But the Qur’an refer Jesus’s mother Mary to Aaron kinship. It emphatically gives a particular significance that Mary’s son ie. Jesus  has the birth right as “the Messiah” or anointed one. From Shemot/Exodus 30:30-31 we read that God ordered prophet Moses to anoint his brother Aaron with a special type of anointment with a particular oil for kings …..from this anointing it give him and his heirs  the right to the priesthood title down to prophet Īsā / Jesus, hence the title Jesus “the Messiah”.
  • There are no mention of Jesus depicted as being  a warrior or a military leader like Moses or Muhammad.  He was mainly in a spiritual mission like most of the ordinary prophets.
  • The Qur’an does not present the Messiah as an eschatological figure. He lived, died, and will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection like everyone else.
  • The Qur’an rejects presenting Jesus as a unique kind of prophet and it refutes portraying the Messiah’s appearance as the climax of history. Jesus was very much part of history in the same way that every other prophet was.
  • One attribute that the Qur’anic Jesus shares with the Jewish  concept of a messiah perhaps is his human nature.  Jesus was a just prophet and messenger — a servant of God.
  • Qur’an 3:45  gives an indication that the Messiah was a concept that God had previously revealed: a prophecy, although this prophecy is not specifically cited anywhere in the Qur’an as mentioning it centuries after it was fulfilled would not serve any purpose.
  • The Qur’anic Messiah neither presents Messiahship of Jesus as a savior to bring the Jews to restore its own kingdom nor the one who save people from sin by playing role as atoning agent. Jesus in the Qur’an  is no unique savior,  he is just a messenger and prophet albeit one of special messenger who was conceived miraculously and performed impressive miracles.
  • The Qur’an rejects the idea that the Messiah ever suffered the Passion, it never teaches a suffering or resurrected messiah.

As a final point I tend to hold the position that the messiahship of Jesus in the Qur’an represent the original concept of the messiah or one messiah which was revealed by God, the title is just for any past figures who were anointed as a gesture to sanctify themselves. Thus Jesus saw his messiahship as teaching Jewish people to salvation by showing them the right way to God, a mandate which was to confirm the divine messages that had been revealed to previous prophets, that is calling people back to the way of God of Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Aaron and all Hebrew prophets.  That is the historical Messiah the Qur’an is telling us about.

Allah Knows best.

    • Salam Kabir,

It depends on the what eschatological definition we subscribe to. We see from the gospels that the christian understanding of Jesus second coming might have been developed by Jesus early followers to explain his failure to deliver what they thought the Christ was sent because the end time was near 2,000 years ago. Neither the Qur’an mention this concept of returning Messiah, the Qur’anic messiah fulfilled his earthly mission. Nevertheless, I am aware there are a number of hadiths attributed to Prophet Muhammad that seems to confirm Jesus second coming.

This my thought about the subject as well:

“The main feature of the Messiah is to be a prophet. That what Quran stated about him.
His far grandmother is Aaron because Mary was from Aaronic lineage according to Quran, and according to the Hebrew bible, Aaron is the first one to be anointed. This is interesting since scholars found that jews had developed many types of messiahs in the Dead Sea scrolls, one of which is the priest one.
Moreover, the term (Massih) in Arabic is known linguistically. The verb (M-S-H) in Arabic means to anoint, and if you transformed that verb using this template ( XaXeeX) فعيل, it would mean the anointed one. In fact, many things could be said about this template in Arabic and how we can understand it.

And as any prophet in Quran, if you obey that prophet and obey the One who sent him (i.e Allah), you will have your rewards, otherwise you’ll be punished .

    Surah 5:12-13
” And Allah had already taken a covenant from the Children of Israel, and We raised from among them twelve chieftains. And Allah said, “I am with you. Surely, If you establish prayer and give zakah(alms) and believe in My messengers and support them and lent unto Allah a goodly loan, I shall surely absolve you of your evil deeds and admit you to gardens beneath which rivers flow. But whoever of you disbelieves after that has certainly strayed from the soundness of the way.”
“Then for their breaking of the covenant We cursed them and made their hearts hard. They distort words from their [proper] usages and have forgotten a portion of that of which they were reminded. And you will still observe deceit among them, except a few of them. But pardon them and overlook [their misdeeds]. Indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.”

It’s quite interesting that jews have been waiting for a salvation by a messiah while they don’t even consider to observe the Mosaic law. If you want God’s Salvation, you have to keep your covenant which includes obeying all prophets of Allah. God’s covenant has been always conditional. Jews are waiting for messiah from God while God is waiting you to keep his covenant, and you can’t do that except by believing in Jesus and Muhammad peace be upon them all” .

    Notes :
*I don’t consider Qur’an 3:45 as indication for a prophecy rather it’s just a glad tiding for Maryam.
*In Quran, Jesus has not died yet. He is a sign that the the day of judgement is so close.

    Allah knows the best.

Why do you suppose he was born to a virgin?

the fact that the quran only “suggests” any meaning for the title of messiah shows that whoever wrote it simply did not know what it meant or its significance.

Quran doesn’t suggest any meaning, nor does he copy the notion developed by rabbinic literature about messiah. Quran is an authority by itself.
Aaron was the first one who got anointed in your bible. What does that mean?
Christians linked themselves with Jewish rabbinic concept, so we find them got stumbled with many facts contradicting with Jesus of history! Your gospeles invented many stories such as the place of birth of Jesus and The lineage of Jesus. You ended by so contradictory result. You may read the lineage of Jesus in each gospel! You did that just to make Jesus fit with Jewish one.

Christianity is fundamentally a sect of judaism – granted, this was long forgotten by christians – and perhaps denied by jews – but it is a fact nevertheless.

I agree that the quran gives no meaning to the term “messiah” and this one of the things that makes islam not part of the judeo-christian tradition even though it appropriates a huge amount of its mythology from judeo-christian fables, mythology and apocrypha.

This statement of yours ” the fact that the quran only “suggests” any meaning for the title of messiah shows that whoever wrote it simply did not know what it meant or its significance” is FALSE.
      Why ?
Because the promised meesaih is a concept developed by rabbinic let literature. In fact, many jews stated the term ( messiah) is not mentioned in the whole OT while it’s related to that concept. One of the them is Dr. Immanuel.
Quran repeatedly blamed jews for rejecting God’s prophets if those prophets are not according to jews’s desires.
The most important thing about Jesus that he’s a prophet speaking by a revelation given by God.

That is as circular as it gets – the quran is true because the quran is true. That is a very gullible and credulous position.

Regardless, no credible NT scholar has argued for the historicity of that statement because there are no ancient manuscripts from jesus’ time that show it to be authentic. The hadith are barely historically credible and the quran’s version of jesus is far less so since it is not supported by any evidence whatsoever.

Indeed, My servants – no authority will you have over them, except those who follow you of the deviators.

This actually destroys your argument – and shows allah’s convoluted reasoning. From the above, clearly some of allah’s chosen (the “deviators”) will sin. Either way, the quote does not even come close to establishing any doctrine of sinlessness as an attribute of all the prophets.

We know the Qur’an can be trusted because it is memorized from the day it was revealed till now. Wrong.

#1 This is a prayer, not that actually the prophet have sinned.

#2 The word ‘zanb’ ذنب  which the verse use dont necessarily mean “sins” but can mean humanly mistake.

There is nothing in the Qur’an mentioning that prophet Muhammad did any sin, big or small. On the contrary what we have is a promise from God command to prophet Muhammad that he has protected him from past and future sin and bestowed His favor to the Prophet to guide him and his followers to the straight path eternally.

“That Allah may forgive thee (لِيَغْفِرَ لَكَ ) thy mistakes dzanbika (ذَنْبِكَ) of the past and those to follow; fulfill His favour to thee; and guide thee on the Straight Way;” (Holy Quran 48: 2)

The same exact word is used in gospel Matthew 6 when prophet  Jesus  prayed to his God for the forgiveness of his faults.

Read in Arabic translation (van Dyke) as follows

      Jesus said:

أبانا ألذي فى السموات Abānā alladhī fīs samāwāt My Father who is in Heaven,
خبزنا كفافنا واعطنا الرزق أليوم khubzanā kafāfanā wa´tinā rizq al yawm Give us provision for today
واغفر لنا ذنوبنا  waghfir lanā dzunūbanā forgive our sins

You see exactly the same arabic word is used for “fault” in Matthew is  “dzanb” ذنب‏ the same  as in the Qur’an.  As I explained earlier  It does mean that prophet of God like Muhammad and Jesus has committed intentional grave “sin” thus makes them a “sinner”. God always guided them and keep them in the state of holiness whenever they made humanly faults.

There is no verse in the Quran that mentions that he has already died. Only that Jesus said that he will die which if we are only going by the Quran could still be in the future. We have multiple Hadith statements that speak of his second coming. So his coming is one of the signs of the end.

If He hasn’t died yet, where did He go? Where is He now?

Are you suggesting during His second coming that He will die at that time?

He said: I am only a messenger of thy Lord, that I may bestow on thee a faultless son. Surah 19:19

      I say;
Faultless is not sinless. Every child is born sinless and will continue to be sinless but not faultless until he/she reaches puberty where he/she automatically knows right and wrong. He/she is responsible for his actions when he/she reaches puberty.

Jesus committed sin in the Bible by calling a woman Dog. He insulted poor woman and he expressed hatred towards women and gentiles including you. Jesus ransacked peoples properties by destroying their properties(chairs and tables) which land him in jail today for disorderly conduct and property damage.

Jesus allowed prophet Abraham to rape his slave and gave birth to illegitimate child. Sex outside marriage is a sin and Jesus allowed that.

      Thanks.

And it is a matter [already] decreed.’ “

    • None of the above makes him divine though.

Faultless – There are other Biblical prophets who are faultless.
Born to a virgin – Adam(ra) and Eve(ra) were created in unique ways as well.
Pure – Is similar to being faultless right ?
Performed miracles – Many Biblical prophets performed miracles
Highly regarded by Muhammad PBUH – All the prophets are highly regarded by Muhammad (pbuh). We consider some of the Biblical prophets in a higher station than the Jews and the Christians themselves.
