“Systemic Cursing” of Jews and Muslims in Galatians 1 “Disconcerts” Pastor Tony Costa?

“Disconcerted” by Paul’s Curses?

Right, let’s swiftly put this this polemic to bed and highlight gross inconsistency and intellectual dishonesty/negligence on the part of the polemicists. Evangelical Christian Polemicists like Jay Smith and Pastor Tony Costa claim Surah Al Fatiha (the first chapter in the Quran) is a prayer cursing Jews and Christians. They claim the last Verse  of the Surah is a curse on the Jews and the Christian.
This is not true at all – read it for yourself.
Anybody willing to expend a scintilla of comprehension can see that it is not a curse. A curse is when one prays for bad to fall upon a person: Muslims are not asking for God to be angry with Jews and Christians here!

Pastor Tony Costa states he finds this “disconcerting” as he shockingly styles the prayer in Surah Al Fateha as “systemic cursing of Jews and Christians” that “vilify Jews and Christians” [Timeframe 5.50] whilst elsewhere, Jay Smith’s team spin it as “the cursing prayer”!

My response to Tony is that you need to actually read the text for yourself and comprehend it rather than going off what some Christian polemicist is saying on the internet. No need to feel disconcerted about Muslim prayers, Tony.

However, Tony Costa in his written work, has said Paul of Tarsus (in Galatians 1) curses anybody who does not teach the same Gospel as him:

There are such things as divine curses in the Bible where God for instance pronounces judgment on those who pervert and preach a different Gospel (see Galatians 1:6-9), or brings a curse on those who do not love the Lord Jesus (see 1 Corinthians16:22). [Pastor Tony Costa]

Here’s Paul of Tarsus in his own words Galatians 1:

8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! 9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!

Is anybody disconcerted yet?

Tony Costa and his Trinitarian missionary colleagues will believe Paul’s words are a curse against Muslims, Jews, Unitarian Christians, Jehovah Witnesses and Mormons as the aforementioned do not accept the Trinitarian view of Jesus.

Tony Costa, if consistent, would find Paul’s words in Galatians to be “disconcerting” and a “systemic cursing of Jews” which “vilify” Muslims, Jews, Athests, Hindus, Sikhs, etc.

Perhaps Tony forgets the words of Paul and what he writes in his academic work when he is in the company of polemicists against Islam? From this example, it seems, he totally forgets academic standards, intellectual integrity, fairness and comprehension skills when he puts his anti-Islam hat on.

  3. you know they are desperate when they are trying this hoodwink lol! It’s a sure sign that their false belief is being dismantled and rejected at an exponential rate. People are Flocking to Islam in their thousands to embrace the promise that God gave mankind.

    • With Jay Smith sadly it’s standard argumentation to dishonour commitment to truth and accuracy. With Tony Costa, a pastor and an academic, I’m seeing a few examples of the same stuff. I hope he has enough about him to apologise. To make such a slur up about Muslim prayer is not only offensive to Muslims but it puts Muslim minorities in potential danger from gullible right-wingers who believe such slurs.

  4. Yahya, this post is offensive to Christians and puts us in potential danger from Muslim jihadis who believe such slurs.

    • You shouldn’t say that to Yahya Snow

    • Sorry Paulus,

I’m too busy hiding in the basement in fear of all the wild right-wingers Tony and Jay have ruled up thinking we are cursing them 5 times a day.

Will try to speak out and defend you when things calm down this end 🙂

    • Yahya.

First, is it your mum’s basement?

Second, I highly doubt you pray five times a day.

Third, and finally, I will let you in on a little secret that I don’t think has permeated the Muslims community. It is not the polemics of mostly unknown Christians that stirs up right wingers, it’s the constant attacks, rapes, murders, riots, etc committed by your co-religionists.

Did you see the Christian shop owner in Egypt get his throat slit by your co religionist recently?

Did you see what your co religionists did on New Years in France and Germany?

Did you see your co religionist shoot up the airport in Florida?

Perhaps before playing the victim card you could leave the basement and see reality for yourself. But be careful, you might get offended by a right winger, the worst crime imaginable.

    • Nah Paulus I didn’t see any of that. My eyes have been occupied by all the strife and violence brought to the world by the group these two rabbis would argue to be the most violent group in world history:

    • yeah paulus, snow is right, jesus brought nothing but hate, hate and hate

and the jews don’t even know why you guys love them

      i quote

When Jesus, addressing all Jews and not just the Pharisees, tells them that they are children of the devil, liars, and murderers (John 8:44), when he calls the Pharisees from which all Jews are descended a brood of vipers (Matthew 3:7, 12:34, 23:33), when Christian scripture teaches that all Jews for all time are responsible for the death of their God (Matthew 27:25) when Paul says the Jews killed God, are displeasing to Him, and are hostile to all men (1 Thessalonians 2:15)–what’s a Christian to do?

How can a Christian believe that the spawn of Satan, who are liars and murderers, vipers, and God killers, are also created in God’s image and you shall love them as yourself? The fact that many Christians today don’t hate Jews is the greater mystery than the fact that Christians have hated us for most of their history.

    • Mr Heathcliff

I wouldn’t say Jesus brought nothing but hate. Jesus brought teachings of pure Abrahamic monotheism and to love God.

Certainly our Christian friends need to look into why Jews think christians are arguably the most violent people in world history.

Sadly many of them are spending their time bashing Muslims online or involved in baseless arguments with Muslims

    • Paulus isn’t it funny that Muslims do nothing but slur Christians all day long even in their prayers 5 times a day and then when we expose them they claim that their lives are the one in danger lol

  5. You might warn people off the Muhsin Khan translation since it inserts stuff into the text that’s not in the original. His version may reflect partial interpretations; God could have easily made al-Fatiha as the Wahhabi version, but did not in fact do so.

  7. Lizzie Schofield: Happy New Year to you too, Yahya Snow. When you link to Sura al Fatiha, you don’t link to the footnotes, which according to Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud clarify: ‘those who went astray’ = Christians, and those who earned Allah’s anger = Jews. Can you explain what kind of prayer this is? It’s hardly asking Allah’s blessing on Jews and Christians, is it?

Hey Lizzie Schofield thanks for taking the time to read the post. I am aware of the tafsir – that too in no way shape of form can be described as a “curse” – but do you know the tafsir literature teaches the ones who Allah is angry with are those who know the truth but don’t act on it whilst those who are astray are those who don’t have knowledge. So this is not specifically Christians and Jews – what is being taught here is the 2 traits I outlined: Atheists, Hindus and other worldviews are all included.

We both come from exclusivist traditions thus you believe we and other non-Trinitarians are misguided, Paul of Tarsus took this further by cursing anybody who doesn’t teach the same view of Jesus as him.

In addition Muslims can be of these traits raised in the tafsir to a lesser extent (ie knowledge w/o action – just think of all the Muslims who know they shouldn’t gamble that do (pick any other sin and apply it accordingly).

Hope you’re well and hope this comment has helped a little. If you want to discuss it further feel free to comment on that link or hit me up via PM.

    God bless.

  8. Those amongst Christians and Jews who intentionally distort, misportray, and misrepresent Islamic texts in order to maliciously disseminate false information about Muslim belief do not serve the cause of truth and violate the commandment, “Do not to bear false witness against thy neighbor.”

    • Plus Christians typically take the side of the spirit of the law (mostly without knowing it at all) and often just profess with their tongues without walking the walk. They also stereotype Jews as only being concerned about the letter of the law. It seems Muslims are supposed to take a middle course.

But Muslims of course still have both types, from extreme conservatives who ignore spirit and alienate others, to libertines and goofy sufis who test boundaries.

  9. Sam said ” There you have it folks! Five times every day Muslims are essentially beseeching their god to never allow them to become Jews or Christians, which gives you an idea of what Muhammad really thought about them”
I pray each day that I will not go by the same path that Jews and christians go. What’s worng with that ?

“The prince of peace” labeled jews who didn’t believe in him as ( snakes & sons of satan), would Sam pray to become one of them?
