Former Contributor to Solas CPC Promoting Unorthodox Trinity Belief

UPDATE: Richard Lucas did send me a message stating he is no longer a contributor to Solas CPC

Richard Lucas, a  contributor for Dr Andy Bannister’s Solas Centre for Public Christianity, was promoting a heretical idea of the Trinity in a debate with Muslim apologist Dr Shabir Ally. Richard believes God used to be one Person but divided into 3 centres of consciousness to become  Tri-Personal. This is not “orthodox” Trinitarian thought.

Dr Andy Bannister, the new director of Solas CPC

I appreciate that Richard Lucas was honest and sincere enough to openly admit Tawheed ( the Islamic concept of God) is coherent and logical. Richard does practically demonstrate the Trinitarian concept of God is incoherent and illogical at the same time.

All the relevant clips of Richard Lucas on his view of the  Trinity are captured in this video

A couple of quick points (which I may add to in a future review of the debate):

1. Richard Lucas claims God divided into 3 and became a Trinity. This theory contradicts the belief that God is immutable (unchanging). Richard Lucas’ theory of God dividing constitutes a belief that God changed His nature. Richard is faced with these problems:

-For change to take place then that suggests chronological order. Seen as God is eternal the idea of God changing is problematic.

-God is the Perfect Being thus does not need to change. To suggest God changed His nature could be conceived as suggesting at one time He was not the Perfect Being.

-Believing God changed into a Trinity arguably contradicts Bible verses like Malachi 3:6 if one views those verses to teach God doesn’t change His nature

I the LORD do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.

2. Dr Andy Bannister’s Solas Centre for Public Christianity has another issue which Richard was honest enough to acknowledge. Richard Lucas’ bravery in publicly stating this should be commended. Richard  Lucas openly admitted the Bible does not limit the number of Persons in the Godhead head, he then went on to say(according to his Biblical Christian view) God could add more Persons to the Godhead by dividing again.

It goes without saying that this is an effective admission that Trinitarian cannot even have confidence in believing the Trinity to be a truth about God (even from a Christian/Biblical perspective!).

NOTE: Richard was promoting something like Apollinarianism too concerning Jesus’ nature but that may well be a discussion for another day.

Though I would say that a number of Trinitarian forms are heretical (i.e. they are ultimately either modalistic or tritheistic), I do not believe that all forms are. The form of Trinitarianism I espouse (as well as many Eastern Orthodox theologians, Samuel Clarke, Bishop Bull, the original Nicene Creed, et al.) fully affirms the teaching of Jesus as recorded in Mark 12:29, wherein he clearly states that the one God of Israel was/is Yahweh. To which I would add, this one Yahweh was/is God the Father.

So true, which means we need to examine one’s claim/s. Jesus in Mark 12:29 is clearly affirming what the Jews of his day believed about Yahweh—i.e. Yahweh was one in the absolute sense—one God, one person, the absolute being who is the source of everything else that exists.

The Trinitarian you referenced cannot affirm this; as such, his belief contradicts Mark 12:29.

      Agreed.

      ==And you are not David!==

Not the David who wrote the Psalm in question; but, none the less, I am David.

==So would you mind answering the question about your theology? Is God in your view made up of one Lord, or two Lords, or three Lords, or more? Simple question dude.==

Yahweh, God the Father, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of Jesus Christ, is one God, one Lord, one King, one person, et al.; yet, these facts do not preclude the Bible from affirming that this same Yahweh is, “God of Gods, and Lord of Lords” (Duet. 10:17; see also Jos. 22:22; Psa. 136:2; Dan. 2:47; Dan. 11:36); and that this Yahweh has begotten a unique Son who shares His nature.

You say the question is simple; it is in one sense, but complex in another. The same is true when one examines how the Bible uses the terms “God” and “Lord”. Fact is, these terms as used in more than one sense, but you continue to try and conflate them into just one sense. Poor methodology in my view…

Yes, but not in what has been termed the “Latin” form. The Trinitarianism I endorse closely resembles that of the pre-Nicene and Nicene CFs, the Cappadocians, Samuel Clarke, and John Behr forms. I have detailed my views at length on my blog, particularly under the label Monarchy of God the Father.

It is becoming painfully clear that you do not possess a good comprehension of this form of Trinitarianism.

==If yes how many Lords are there in God? 1,2,3, or more?==

As I have clearly stated more than once on your blog, “the one God” of the Bible; “the one God” who is Yahweh; “the one God” who is one King and one person; this “one God” is one Lord. To ask, “how many Lords are there in God” in the context of the Trinitarianism I espouse is nonsensical.

==How many Lords did Jesus say God is?==

      ONE.

I believe that “the one God” of the Bible (Yahweh/God the Father) is ONE PERSON. To ask, “how many Lords are there in [this one] God” is nonsensical in my book (i.e. it makes no sense).

Now, I have stated that the “one God” of the Bible is one person here at your blog more than once, and this prior to your “how many Lords are there in God” question. PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME HOW YOUR QUESTION MAKES SENSE: I personally cannot begin to fathom how multiple lords can be in ONE PERSON.

    Like

    • do you believe God is an irrational, incoherant being? Why should an educated person believe in that theology?

      Like

    • Well, the tradition to have a logical foundation in God comes from science and his logical structure of silogism (more refined than Aristotle’s). Science studies the world. Therefore, understandong world doesn’t need the same foundation of God as you may know God is a separated being from the world. Plus, Islam is the only religion that tries to justify it’s beliefs on science, even though judaism and christianism rejected science. If Shabir Ally and other muslim scholars say there are a lot of misteries in the Bible, Quran, etc, why the nature of God has to be logical and therefore a non- mistery?

    • Wittgenstein believed God was a non-logical being, does that say Wittgenstein was an uneducated person? If one of the major logician of all times was uneducated according to you, then I don’t know what is to be educated. Even mathematicians don’t know the nature of natural numbers. Gottlob Frege puts the example of the mistery of number one, just as the concept of infinite is a mistery we doesn’t know the nature of one. So if one of the most prominent mathematician and logician was humble to admit that, Muhammad (who had no clue where the sun sets, or what christians believe) surely he had no clue when he said that God is one. By the way, the foundations of mathematics aren’t logical since the crisis of this matter in the decade of 1920 when the sets theory later on was revelead his unlogical nature. See Bertrand Russell’s paradox.

    • 1) What lies behind your rejection of that belief is death as ceasing of existence, which even you don´t believe. So I would expect to hear that argument from an atheist. 2) God can make the impossible possible, so if He can raise sons of Abraham from the stones he can die for our sins and resurrect. 3) The knowledge of the nature of God is beyond our comprehension (our intellectual faculty is finite), therefore the true knowledge of God has to come from Himself. As Jesus says in Matthew 11:27 “and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him”. If you don’t understand that Jesus is God, that died for our sins and raised in the third day is because He hasn´t chose you to reveal Him (yet). That’s why Jesus tells us in Matthew 16:17 “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven”. If we can know your Allah by our pure inner intellectual activity, then the deeds of the flesh and blood I’d do, but because Jesus reveals us the spiritual things, the spiritual deeds we the christians do and believe.

Why is it the most important theology which is supposedly the very foundation of our salvation must be expressed in such a inexplicable way? I do not think trinity is the way God ever intended to describe Himself. It’s nowhere in scriptures and it’s not coherent and logical.

    • 1) No one says death means cease to exist. The argument that the body of jesus died not his soul is very weak. Our soul doesn’t die either, but we aren’t immortal are we? Also,if only the body died, that means God didn’t die,as the body isn’t God,only the soul/spirit is(according to you)
This is what the bible says regarding God’s immortality.

He alone can never die, and he lives in light so brilliant that no human can approach him. No human eye has ever seen him, nor ever will. All honor and power to him forever! Amen.[1 Timothy 6:16]

So according to the bible,God can never die,nor can any human eye see him. From the 3 persons in the trinity, who died for your sins,if they all can never die.You see the problem here?

      2) So your God can do things like die and resurrect(which are not a positive attribute btw),but He can’t forgive sins without the shedding of blood? It’s like your God doesn’t have the power to do so,or He just wants his own blood and lacks mercy.

      3) No one claims that they can know Allah by pure inner intellectual activity. We believe that we can truly know Allah only by what Allah reveals to us through His prophets.Just like during the time of Jesus(pbuh) he revealed things through jesus. In the time of Muhammad(pbuh),he revealed things through him.But what we do say is that the trinity is illogical, and contradicts itself.

Just remember one thing,if the trinity is false, you are committing shirk,or in your terms, idolatry.

Come to the true monotheistic worship of one God.The One true God of Abraham,Moses,Jesus and Muhammad.

he argument that the body of jesus died not his soul is very weak. Our soul doesn’t die either, but we aren’t immortal are we?

This is a huge problem for Islam – and you are confused. If you believe in resurrection and an eternal life thereafter, then you have to acknowledge that at some point if you do enough zakat you will become immortal in islamic heaven. This destroys the dumb argument that there is an unassailable boundary between the finite and infinite that cannot be crossed. This degrades allah – we have abilities that allah does not have because we can be both finite and infinite, but allah cannot.

So according to the bible,God can never die,nor can any human eye see him. From the 3 persons in the trinity, who died for your sins,if they all can never die.You see the problem here?

The OT is full of humans seeing god – the mother of ishmaelites saw him. You are just plain wrong. The trinity – the true god manifesting in different forms whilst existing transecendetly simultaneously – makes these accounts possible. Tawheed is not reflected in the tanakh – it is an alien pagan concept that limits god.

So your God can do things like die and resurrect(which are not a positive attribute btw),but He can’t forgive sins without the shedding of blood?

      Yawn.

God requires the shedding of blood because he commanded it from his chosen people. This is not an example of god’s limits, but of his trustworthiness – he demands something, and in return makes a promise and he keeps his promise. Allah, on the other hand, is capricious and therefore untrustworthy.

“We believe that we can truly know Allah only by what Allah reveals to us through His prophets.

The quran doesn’t say much about most o the prophets and has no historical value when it comes to the life of jesus. Whatever the quran reveals to you is either incomplete or corrupted oral fables borrowed from other faiths.

Even worse, is that the quran is reliant on man-made hadiths and traditions that were only written down centuries after mohammed died – so what mohammed taught and how allah wants muslims to worship is not in the “holy” book of allah, but comes from men who never knew the prophet, were not eye-witnesses, and who probably had political motives.

“Just remember one thing,if the trinity is false, you are committing shirk,or in your terms, idolatry.

The trinity is not false – god’s plurality is clearly described in the old testament and the new. The quran doesn’t know this because it had no access to the OT and NT – it is a book of conjecture based on religious speculation.

  9. It’s quite simple really…

1 John 5:7 was never called fraudulent or fake or anything else nor was it ever removed from the Bible.

“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word (Jesus), and the Holy Ghost; and these three are ONE.”

Also, to address a couple comments about Jesus never saying he was the Son of God or that have problems with the trinity of one God, just as those in the video have (see 1 John 5:7 regarding the trinity, as stated above):

    In Genesis,

John 6:48 “I am that bread of life.”
John 9:5 “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
John 8:23 “And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.”
John 8:58 “Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, before Abraham was, I am.”

I AM goes back to Moses where he asked God for a name to tell the people who sent him.
Exodus 3:14 “And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.”

Matthew 3:16-17 ( Also Mark 1:9-11) “And jesus, when was baptized, went up straightaway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and the saw the Spirit of God, descending like a dove, and lighting upong him. And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
John 1:1-2 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.” (In other words, the Word was not only God but WITH God at the same time)
John 1:14 ” And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
In Genesis, on day 1, God said “Let there be light:” This is the Light of the world, another name for Jesus. The sun to provide light upon the earth, was not created until day 4.

If you read the scriptures, you can see “The Word” is Jesus (Yeshua), YHWH (Yahweh) is God the Father, and then there is the Holy Ghost, or Spirit of God. This gives us God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. In Genesis 1:26 it is spoken by God “Let US make man in OUR image, after OUR likeness:” The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit all reside together in perfect harmony as one, but each individual in person. They are forever together as one. The Father always remains in heaven, the Son (the Word of God) became flesh to dwell on the earth for a time, and the Spirit was sent to earth, to dwell in man, remaining on the earth until the end.

In reference to John 17:3 (regarding a comment above), Jesus would pray to God the Father while on earth in the form of man, to show communication between the Son and the Father.

Revelation 1:10-18 “I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, Saying, I am the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it…And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of Man (another title for Christ), clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle…And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.”

The only one that was alive, then dead, and yet is alive, is Jesus. Alive first, since before creation and then on earth as man, then dead (as man), crucified, and alive again, ressurection. The birth, death, ressurection fulfilled prophecy given in Psalms 22 and in the book of Isaiah, along with other prophecy throughout the old testament.

Revelation 22:13 “I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.”
Revelation is given to John on the island of Patmos, the revelation being given by Jesus himself to John.

There is a lot more, you only have to open your eyes, your mind, and read the Bible.

This would suggest that a being that’s omnipresent (God) is way beyond logic boundaries. Therefore, this wouldn’t mean that because the laws of logic (which also are laws of thinking) are shattered this being should not exist.
