Why I believe the Qur’an is what it claims to be: the Word of God

“The proof of the pudding is in the eating”, as we say in England. It is the sheer efficacy of these words – their saving and transforming power – that convinces me of the Divine origin of the Qur’an.

miracles-of-quran

For example, the Qur’an claims that by praying the five daily prayers we will be kept away from indecency and evil acts:

‘Recite that which has been revealed to you of the Book and keep up prayer; surely prayer keeps (one) away from indecency [obscenity/immorality] and evil, and certainly the remembrance of Allah is the greatest, and Allah knows what you do.’

(Surah 29:45)

I have found this to be absolutely true. Not just with external acts but in my inmost being.

Also the Qur’an promises to be a healing and a mercy to believers. This reality is harder to put into words, but the Book subtly affects the heart, softening it, giving it spiritual nourishment, orienting it to what really matters in life:

We send down (stage by stage) in the Qur’an that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe: to the unjust it causes nothing but loss after loss.

(Surah 17:82)

Is this just my subjective experience? Well yes – and no! Anyone can experience this for themselves from whatever their background. And this it does, and has always done, as the history of our Faith proves.

  1. Non sequitur. I’ve read the Koran cover to cover and my conclusion is that is the words of a 7th century Arab developed by his followers. My conclusion is equally valid.

Btw, Surah 29:35 says nothing about the 5 daily prayers- nice bit of wishful exegesis there.

    • God says about the Qur’an:

      “it is a Guide and a Healing to those who believe;

and for those who believe not, there is a deafness in their ears, and it is blindness in their (eyes):

They are (as it were) being called from a place far distant!” (41:44)

This is why you remain unresponsive to the Qur’an: You are deaf and blind.

Surah 29:45 certainly includes the 5 daily prayers – they are prayers after all and God has promised us that by doing them we will be kept away from indecency and evil acts. Millions of believers have found God to be faithful in His promise.

Also, Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “If there was a river at your door and he took a bath in it five times a day, would you notice any dirt on him?” They said, “Not a trace of dirt would be left.” The Prophet said, “That is the parable of the five prayers by which Allah removes sins.”

    • So Paulus, what kind of methodological framework did you use to read the Quran?

Sorry , it’s not your bible. Exegesis of Quran is based in Osool (highly standards).
Wishful thinking is a thing you find it in every church talking about sola scriptura in which each pastor has his own thoughts on the text.

    • “Surah 29:45 certainly includes the 5 daily prayers”

Actually, it doesn’t. 29.:45 says nothing about 5 daily prayers.

“Also the Qur’an promises to be a healing and a mercy to believers. This reality is harder to put into words, but the Book subtly affects the heart, softening it, giving it spiritual nourishment, orienting it to what really matters in life:”

A human made book – i.e. printed on man made paper, using man made ink – has no magical or miraculous properties whatsoever.

      Mere superstition and idolatry.

What about the muslims who pray 5 times a day under the caliphate of Isis? Has God failed to stop them or are there acts halal and justified?

  2. I agree with the post to some extent but have heard this reason from converts to Buddhism, Baha’i and Christianity too, so at most it can only be a confirmation not a basis for knowing it is true.

The reasons the Qur’an gives to prove it is the word of God are:

Do they not consider the Qur’an (with care)? Had it been from other than God, they would surely have found in it much discrepancy. (Qur’an 4:82, Yusuf Ali)

Or do they say, “He (Muhammad) has invented it (the Qur’an)”? Say (to them): “Then bring a sura like it; and call on those you can apart from God, if you are truthful.” (Qur’an 10:38, Jones)

O you People of the Book! Believe in what We have (now) revealed (the Qur’an), confirming what was (already) with you. (Qur’an 4:47, Yusuf Ali)

And if the apostle (Muhammad) were to invent any sayings in Our name, We should certainly seize him by his right hand, And then certainly should have cut off his life artery (Aorta). (Qur’an 69:44-46, Yusuf Ali)

In truth We know that they say, “It is only a mortal who is teaching him.” The speech of the one at whom they hint is foreign, whereas this is clear Arabic speech. (Qur’an 16:103, Jones)

Those who follow the messenger (Muhammad), the prophet of his community, whom they will find mentioned in the Torah and the Gospel in their possession. (Qur’an 7:157, Jones)

Firstly the Qur’an needs to be tested in these areas.

    • I do not deny these other reasons. I am saying why *I* find the Quran to be from God. Also there is much in the Bible too that comes from God and has had a similar effect on my life.

Islam can embrace the truth in previous Revelations.
