The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind

Mark A. Noll (born 1946) is an American historian specializing in the history of Christianity in the United States. He holds the position of Research Professor of History at Regent College, having previously been Francis A. McAnaney Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame. 1. Got that book and read a long time ago; and I and other Reformed Baptists and Presbyterians agree with the books indictment against most of mainstream “Evangelicalism” (Fundamentalism, non-thinking forms of Christianity, especially among TV preachers, Charismatic and Pentecostal groups and fundamentalists, King James Onlyists, a lot of Baptists and other independent groups. (but not all)

James White and I agree with Noll’s over-all assessment. Reformed groups (Reformed Baptists and Presbyterians) work hard against that stuff. “Reformed” just means following the historic doctrines of the Reformation (Luther and Calvin and Zwingli and Reformed Baptists, and those who follow their teachings). or sometimes called “Calvinism”.

Jesus sounds very Calvinistic / Reformed in these passages:

All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
    Matthew 11:27

11 And he answered them, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. 12 For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 13 This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14 Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says:

“‘“You will indeed hear but never understand,
and you will indeed see but never perceive.”
15 For this people’s heart has grown dull,
and with their ears they can barely hear,
and their eyes they have closed,
lest they should see with their eyes
    and hear with their ears
    and understand with their heart
and turn, and I would heal them.’

    Matthew 13:11-15

  2. ” King James Onlyists”

Why do you lump these in? I happen to be one.

Non thinking form? That is a gratuitous insult.

  3. This posted by Paul Williams who believes God spoke through a 7th century mass murdering madman.

  4. The evangelical mind at work as a fundamentalist calvinist and a king james onlyist debate over who is more hopeless while a former demi-god insults a Prophet of God!

What a wacky world we live in, sheesh!
