Sayings that modern Christians would rather Jesus never said

“I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear Him.”

Luke 12

‘Why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said, “Honour your father and your mother,” and, “Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must surely die.” But you say that whoever tells father or mother, “Whatever support you might have had from me is given to God”, then that person need not honour the father. So, for the sake of your tradition, you make void the word of God. You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied rightly about you when he said:

“This people honours me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me,
teaching human precepts as doctrines.”’

Matthew 15

Now large crowds were travelling with him; and he turned and said to them,  ‘Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple.’

Luke 14

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat;  therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practise what they teach.

Matthew 23

Then someone came to him and said, ‘Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?’ And he said to him, ‘Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.’

Matthew 19

  1. “Now large crowds were travelling with him; and he turned and said to them,  ‘Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple.’
    Luke 14”

I can’t find a translation that says “yes, and even life itself”. It’s always in the sense of “yes, and EVEN HIS OWN life also”.

Are you trying to put an Islamic twist on this text? A good Muslim has to devalue life in this world?

    • The NRSV is the translation of choice for most NT scholars. I used it at university too. Best on the market.

      Do you hate life itself?

Just as I said: These are sayings that modern Christians would rather Jesus never said!

      Thanks for proving my point.

    • “I can’t find a translation . . . Are you trying to put an Islamic twist on this text?”

That’s what anti-Muslim preachers like Jay Smith do:

I was a bit surprised to find that Ken Temple engages in this deceitful practice as well.

  3. Jesus never said it according to my bible, and the majority of translations. The latter being a common method amongst Muslims of ascertaining the validity of any particular truth claim.
