I have just spent a delightful evening with a neighbour in Southern France. He is an English antiquarian book collector and lives in a sumptuous residence (as you can see below). He showed me his 1608 edition of the Geneva Bible, which was the edition that the first Pilgrim Fathers took from England to the New World.
The Geneva Bible is one of the most historically significant translations of the Bible into English, preceding the King James Version by 51 years. It was the main Bible of 16th century English Protestantism and was the Bible used by William Shakespeare, Oliver Cromwell, John Knox, John Donne, and John Bunyan, author of Pilgrim’s Progress (1678). It was one of the Bibles taken to America on the Mayflower.
The owner has kindly loaned me the Bible to take back to London to show to friends. I will have to return it!

Very artful and interesting. I enjoyed reading the poem, creatively pieced together from various Biblical verses.
It is interesting to see how the Old English uses the long S written with what looks like an “f” in print.
