A Free English Translation of the Qur’an

Translations vary a lot, and even in modern English the Qur’an does not exactly translate bt“well”. A lot of non-Muslims (and sometimes Muslims) think that it jumps from one topic to another without a topical transition, some compare it to the Psalms. This isn’t exactly a valid criticism though, as the Qur’an does flow quite well but it often takes a good translation in the English language to express its flow in a way that English readers can understand. It should be noted that not all languages have the same language devices, and so it is often difficult to bridge that gap.

I’d say most, if not all English translations lean more to a word for word translation rather than a more contextual translation. This translation is a good mix between the two, while the base text is word for word (akin to Young’s Literal for the NT), its inline commentary bridges the gap nicely and offers just enough contextual information to make it palpable for the English reader’s mindset.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

  1. Hi
What the point of an English translation when Muslims say its not the real koran?

    • It is the Qur’an, just an interpretation of it. All translations are interpretations, it’s why you call language translators…interpreters! The point of it is to access the Qur’an when Arabic is not a language you know.

  2. It is not theologically odd that the language of the Jews, Christians,Polytheists, and others, must already have been so perfect-although spoken by imperfect men, that it should also be fit for further utterrances by the Perfect Being?

    • What is “theologically odd” is that none of the revelations sent down in the language of the Jews, Christians & Polytheists were ever perfectly preserved.

Therefore, the One Perfect Being chose to reveal the final revelation of Qur’an to the descendants of Ishmael (and all mankind) in another highly developed and perfect language – Arabic – since the Arabs were already masters of poetry & the spoken word, and always took care to memorize important works for later recitation, thus accurately documenting & preserving the text of the Holy Qur’an.
