  1. where do “desires” come from?

“I don’t follow my desires” seems to be saying that all desires are evil or wrong.

Does Islam distinguish between good desires and evil desires?

Or do you think that most of them listen or understand? They are only like cattle; nay, they are even farther astray from the Path. (i.e. even worse than cattle).

    (Qur’an 25:43-44)

Anything that takes us further away from God is bad. This is a warning that most people follow the whims of their desires. If we are in control of them and harness them in a halal way (in moderation) that is fine. Rather than being led by desire.

    • To repeat: Harnessing desire in a halal way implies desire is not intrinsically evil. Being led by desire (which is its wont) is ‘evil’ or sinful. Evidence? See my comment and associated link (above).

Islam is the ‘middle’ (‘just’, ‘balanced’) religion [Qur’an 2:143]. It lies wholesomely inbetween hedonism (over-the-top worldliness) and monasticism ( over-the-top of one’s basic humanity)!

There is a connection between hawa (desire) and the nafs (self) and breath and the wayward air: the whim, the wantoness, and the wily wind. You get the idea…

Sex is not sin, within marriage. Sexual desire is not sin within itself. It is lusting and fantasizing that is sinful – Matthew 5:28-30

If Hawa هوی is vain or egotistical desire, etc. what is just “desire” by itself?

Christianity and the Bible distinguishes between desire by itself, which God created the desire for food, water, sex, rest, sleep, purpose, love, friendship, etc. – there is a difference between a good desire and an evil desire.

    • Or maybe, if seen contextually (which you Christians seem incapable of doing), “I don’t follow my desires” is specifically referring to sexual desires. It seems that missionaries want to nitpick about every little thing instead of trying to use their heads for once.

So are sexual desires intrinsically evil ?

    • No, sexual desires are not evil. God commanded us to follow sexual desires in a halal way i.e. married man and a married woman. We follow the commands of God and not our desires. The command of God says “lower your gaze” if you are confronted with sexual desires that are not halal. It did not says it is evil. Sexual desires is not evil but do not follow it in non halal ways. So, we Muslims do not follow our desires but we follow the commandments(laws) of God.

If the desires is not halal, then we do not follow it.

      Thanks.

Your Bible has Jesus as your God allowing his prophets to marry more than one wives. Who are you to abolish what your God Jesus allowed here?

Nope, evil desires come from within us.

Satan is one evil spirit, not omnipresent. He does not need to fool with us; we have our own “Nafs e Amareh” to battle. نفس اماره

      I say;
If wrong desires comes within us then what is satans temptations for? As you admit that satan tempt us every day. What is that for? Satan tempted your God Jesus Christ. May God forbid. My God can never be tempted by anyone let alone satan. Satan tempted your God and showed him the world. If satan is not omnipresent how can he show your God the world?

If satan is not omnipresent how can he tempt all humans everyday? Muslims believe he has shayteen who whispers evil desires unto us. He(satan) caused Adam and eve to sin and he still does that to all of us. If we sin and sincerely repent God will forgive us, like He forgave Adam and Eve. God will not put Adams and Eve in to hell. They did not believe Jesus died for their sins. So, our evil desires comes from satan and he tempt us like he tempted Adam, Eve, Jesus and most prophets.

Um no. That is just your own straw-man argument.

If you are implying that evil desires come from original sin, let me just stop you right there. Original sin is a false concept that is not found even in the Bible.

Evil desires come from Satan’s whispering. Justin Martyr also believed that humans could become evil because of the influence of demons.

Satan is real and demons are real and the do tempt us and harrass us sometimes, but most of the time the problem is our own Nafs e Amareh.
