Animals typically will protect their young to the extent that it does not endanger themselves. A mother gazelle will try to protect her offspring from a lion, but only to the point where she will not be eaten. In the natural world, this makes sense because even if the mother saves the offspring but gets eaten herself, what are the chances of the offspring surviving without the mother? Also, if she survives, the mother can mate again and have more offspring. That’s the harsh reality of the animal world. The human world is different.
