Did you know that St Paul in the New Testament taught that only men are made in the image of God?

Did you know that St Paul in the New Testament taught that only men are made in the image of God? Women are merely made in the image of men. St Augustine a Doctor of the Catholic Church explains why this is.

1 Corinthians 11:7-10 (NRSV):

‘For a man ought not to have his head veiled, since he is the image and reflection of God; but woman is the reflection of man.  Indeed, man was not made from woman, but woman from man.  Neither was man created for the sake of woman, but woman for the sake of man.  For this reason a woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.’

  1. “…because of the angles.”

    Seems like a random add-on.

  2. The reference to the angels may be alluding to the myth that angels came to earth and copulated with women. This myth was widely believed by Jews and Christians, including the early church fathers. But Christians in modern times are embarrassed by the story and deny it.

  3. In 1 Corinthians 11:7, it does not mean Eve was not from the image of God. “Man” is used in the Scripture to represent both sexes.
Even if Adam was the image of God, so far as Eve came from Adam, it is still the product of the image of God.

It means Eve is subject to Adam as he is subject to Christ. Paul was enlightening us of how we need to be subject to man and to God.

Another thing is, God does not create anything twice. He created Adam first and through him He made Eve. That was the reason when He destroyed the first world, He spared Noah and his family to replenish the earth. God doesn’t want to create another man the way He created Adam.

That was the reason Jesus was called the second Adam, born out of the Holy Spirit.

The Scripture is not a storyline neither is it fables nor literature. People read it like a text book instead of through revelation.

In that verse, Paul was even trying to explain why women should have head coverings. At the end Paul still said head coverings is by choice that it is not even in the custom of the church (1 Corith. 11:16).

    God bless you.
