Assalaamu alaikum bro. I wrote a short piece on this topic (for your reference) that utilises this same speech by Dr Brown, here: https://modwestmuse.wordpress.com/2014/06/20/the-old-punishment-for-apostasy-is-death-chestnut/ – it seems that there is a question regarding the current manner in which muslim (modern) nation states dressed up as ‘islamic’ are picking and choosing to mete out alleged ‘islamic’ justice (ie in this case, death by apostacy.) The question is, is it Islamic by virtue of the fact a muslim does it? No. It is by virtue of whether it was practised by the prophet (sallalahu alaihi wa sallum) and how it was acted upon by the Companions.
