‘Paul’s Contradictions of Jesus’

I’ve just discovered this extraordinary site by a Christian attorney in the US.

He writes:

Here is a list of the major contradictions by Paul of things Jesus taught. Some of this was mentioned by others, so when applicable I quote and reference the source who mentioned this. This list is as of March 2013. Come back for updates as I continue to add to this list. Please send me any that you have discovered.

it’s worth looking at: Paul’s Contradictions of Jesus

  1. Yes, extraordinary site which is very informative and highlights the diametrically vast differences between Jesus (peace be upon him) and the self proclaimed theologist, Saul of Tarsus.

  3. Reading this as an agnostic I know that some of the topics are pulled way out of context or just require a bit more logic to understand what Paul was trying to say. Such as the one about food sacrificed to idols, Paul said if someone tells you it has been sacrificed then you shouldn’t eat it but if you don’t know it’s ok – 1 Corinthians 10:27 If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience. 28 But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it.
Also about God living in temples, there is no contradiction when Paul says “God does not live in temples built by human hands” because Solomon said the same thing in his prayer just after building the temple – 1 Kings 8:27 “”But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!” So in many parts this list needs a lot of work.

Nonetheless, on the parts where there are obvious contradictions or cause for confusion/concern I have to say it was very eye opening to see it this way. I haven’t really compared Paul’s and Jesus’ statements side by side before so this was interesting.
Is it just me or did anyone else notice that in many places where Paul contradicts Jesus, he sounds more and more like a Catholic? (Celibacy, saying there are many pastors and teachers, calling the law a curse, instructing us to follow his ways rather than Jesus etc). And then in other parts he sounds more like a Lutheran or Calvinist? (Justification by faith alone, original sin, saved by declaration of Jesus as Lord etc). I actually found out an interesting thing that Martin Luther questioned the canon of James simply because it didn’t fit with his own theological doctrines rather than based on some kind of historical dispute. The letter of James seems to be a nice stumbling block preventing Christians from becoming free spirits in Christ and just staying home saying they’ve been saved already because they simply believe.

Seems like Paul did more to cause division within Christianity than Jesus did. Comparing both Jesus’ and Paul’s words remind me of how pure and simple yet very intellectual Jesus’ words were. But at the same time I don’t think Paul was some kind of deceiver, he seems to have been genuinely convinced of what he believed and saw but maybe he let it get to his head a little, I don’t really know but guess I agree with Omer, he does seem quite self-proclaimed.

  4. Great comments iSeeV

Your description of this analysis as seeing Paul’s quotes versus Jesus’s quotes side by side reminds me of the point that Bart Ehrman repeatedly makes…it is instructive to see the same event each gospel side by side.

There are so many events and they cover so many different issues, that it is hard to see patterns unless one organizes the data by a simple side by side analysis.

I did not notice how some of Paul’s statement support Catholic doctrines/practices and how some support the Protestant doctrines/practices…thanks iSeeV.
