  1. The burden of proof is on the theist, so the ‘arguments leading the atheism’ amount to being unconvinced by the arguments for theism. If the theist trusts her arguments for theism then, according to Lewis, she requires an ‘intelligence behind the universe’ so the conclusion is being assumed in the theist’s arguments’ implicit premises. Therefore the arguments for theism are unsound.

  6. Evolution proceeds by a process of trial and error, so those organisms that have radically erroneous beliefs about the world leave fewer offspring than organisms whose beliefs correspond to the world. This process endows us with the ability to move around without bumping into things and generally to make good enough mental models of the world. Additionally, humans have developed language, conceptual thinking and cultural processes such as the scientific method and the legal system. These are systematic ways of testing world models for error and, over time form an increasingly close representation of how the world is.
Lewis seems to think all of this arises by a purely random process (spilt milk) so he shows he’s not understood evolution.
My first comment suggested that Lewis’ position also undermines theistic arguments. I tend to the view that the theism vs atheism argument can’t be resolved by reason. It’s a matter of faith.

    • C.S. Lewis is comparing the atheist’s materialistic rendering of consciousness to a map of London being created by milk spilling on the ground. The chance of something rational appearing out of a random flow of milk on the ground is as low as your words and thoughts having any meaning if they are only a byproduct of the material processes of the brain.
