  1. Regarding creeds, Dr. Yasir Al-Qadhi is cherry-picking if he is only dealing with Athari and Ashari creeds.

    Cherry-picking is very unscholarly.

Although I am not a Shia Muslim, the position of Shia Muslims (like on Divine Simplicity) arguably predate Athari statements on attributes of God.

For example there are amazing sermons on the attributes of God attributed to Ali ibn Abi Talib which talk of God in the way the best philosophers would understand God.

    Please see http://www.al-islam.org/al-tawhid/general-al-tawhid/selection-glimpses-nahj-al-balaghah-mutahhari/theology-and-metaphysics

Also the Mutazilites who are Sunnis who also had a philosophically profound understanding of God that differs from the simplistic creeds which leads a reader to slip into the terrain of anthropomorphism or is anthropomorphic to begin with ALSO predated the Athari treatises. (Some Western scholars think that Shia Muslims adopted the positions of the Sunni Mutazilites…that is somewhat true but the sermons of Ali ibn Abi Talib and other descendants of Ali (who are also descendents of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) also very strongly demand that we must not think of God in any way that can lead to any bit of anthropomorphism).

AND it was political reasons indeed that also account for why the Mutazilites were largely removed…at first there were a few political leaders who supported them such as Al-Mamun who also a great patron of the sciences which led to the massive intellectual output of Muslims.

But when tyrranical leaders like Al-Mutawakil and many like him who followed him outlawed Mutazilites, then that led to a downturn in Muslim intellectual outputs in some areas and it became worse and worse as that became institutionalized and fossilized.

  2. Just want to add that Dr. Yasir Qadhi is a great articulator and a great source of knowledge on some Islamic concepts.

I recently saw an excellent youtube of his on proofs of the Qur’an being from God and proofs of Islam being from God from examining the Prophet’s life.

However, Dr. Qadhi is very biased in favor of Salafi thought and does not comment on other perspectives fully when he engages in intra-Islamic topics.
