Thanks to Richard Zetter for lending me this book this afternoon.

  1. Seems like a popular missionary polemic. A devastating review was offered by Prof. Walid Saleh (which you already have I think).

  2. He mentions Tabari but doesn’t mention Maturidi, who also wrote a major commentary and is contemporary to Tabari? Not very thorough.

Also FYI Tabari himself thinks the people of the book edited and changed the text and he’s extremely explicit in his view.

I don’t know who he’d consider earlier then Imam Tabari, unless he is citing Hadith and oral reports from companions of Muhammad, which include Ibn bbas, who says there was textual change.
