“Once the biblical history had been divested of dogma, the Christ proclaimed by the Church seemed in unavoidable conflict with Jesus himself. There was a manifest contradiction between what historical investigation discovered about Jesus of Nazareth and what the Church said of him in its preaching, between what Jesus himself originally proclaimed and did and what the Church afterwards made of him.”
