The Revd Christopher Tuckett is a British biblical scholar and Anglican priest. He is Professor of New Testament Studies at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Pembroke College. His analysis (below) is widely shared by other NT scholars. If accurate, it means we cannot simply read the gospels as if they tell us what the *historical Jesus* actually said and did. We are reading (to a greater or lesser degree) the interpretations and opinions about Jesus of later unknown Christian writers. The gospels are anonymous works whose authorship is unknown.
