  1. Worthy point to be mindful of for those who study the evolution of Christianity and claims made by mainstream Christians trying to connect their teachings to early generations.

    Thanks Nazam and thanks Paul.

  2. An illiterate Aamaic speaking peasant fisherman from Galilee having greek “disciples” in one of the wealthiest towns in Asia Minor is highly unlikely.

  3. Good point Buhanuddin but John was actually Greek himself as Bart Ehrman and others professors say (unless I am mistaken).

I believe what most scholars say today about the author of the Gospel of John is that they were most likely a convert to Christianity at the tail end of the first century writing in Syria, i am not sure if that person was Greek, however according to Christian tradition the attributed author of the Gospel (John the son of Zebedee and brother of James) was a Jewish man, a fisherman by trade living in Galilee.

  5. Thanks for the clarification Patrice. Most scholars including Bart Ehrman think that the alleged historical disciple “John” (most probably an illiterate Aramaic speaking peasant fisherman from Galilee) did not write any book of the NT

  6. Hi Burhanuddin1

I hope i didn’t confuse anyone on my position, I understand what the general view among New Testament scholars are regarding the Gospel of John and I agree that the evidence certainly points to John not being the author, heck even Pope Benedict XVI had repeated this in his book “Jesus of Nazareth” which ironically was among the first texts where I had discovered this.

The second being the commentary of a leading Catholic scholar by the name of Dom Henry Wansbrough in his New Jerusalem Bible commentary

  7. So by that standard even St Peter knows that John did not write it, and who are we to disagree??
