  1. To the extent that he is the mayor of London, he has to be representative of all Londoners including the LGBT community. He doesn’t tout himself as a religiously observant orthodox Muslim so why act surprised when he does these things?

    • Simple: he calls himself a Muslim. Is Islam so flexible that it encompasses views that the Qur’an and sunnah call haram?

    • Your question presumes that to the extent that someone calls himself a Muslim, everything he says or does has to be in line with orthodox Islamic teachings. This is not how the world works. In any case, the Mayot did not justify his participation in the LGBT rally by appealing to orthodox Islam so the question of Islam’s flexibility is irrelevant.

    • its not a question of being ‘orthodox’ or not. Islam has a distinct and clear body of teachings. He therefore rejects the Quran and sunnah. This is scandalous to Muslims whom he represents as well, don’t forget

  3. As the Mayor of London he has to be pro-LGBT. But nobody forced him to become the Mayor of London.

  5. The Mayor is distinguishing between his religious beliefs and his political office, as it should be.

    • His attendance in a political capacity does not have to equate to endorsement on a religious level.

    • That seems a bit problematic to me. If anyone can somehow divorce their moral self with their political self, it can cast into doubt whether they truly hold such beliefs. When you’re doing something because your religion or code of ethics tells you to, and are questioned for it by a person genuinely inquiring, if you simply say “it’s because my religion/code says so”, it may look like you do it simply because you were brought up to, and don’t really believe in such religion or code of ethics’ truth.

Regarding this incident here, if he’s trying to do as you say, just makes one question to what extent he believes in such religion.. makes it as if he doesn’t believe what these people stand for is truly a repugnant thing. If the argument is that they stand for multiple things, then sure, accept the humanisation but not the actions, but usually with regards to this kind of thing, blanket acceptance of everything’s demanded, nuance doesn’t exist. And since most don’t see nuance, even if you do, actions of support will mean you support it all to them.

      Just my thoughts though.

    • When entering into political office in a city as multi-cultural as London, you need to be able to compartmentalise. He is representing the entire city in his role as Mayor and as such, cannot be seen to be discriminating against any groups.

It’s also worth noting that he isn’t coming out in endorsement of homosexuality. He is representing all the citizens of London, in his formal capacity. If he’s not capable of separation of church and state, he should not be in office.

    • He can do that without going on pride parades though..

And again, I don’t get how he can do this and still secretly view what actions these people do as very abhorrent. Again, makes one cast doubt into how much of the religion’s moral teachings he really upholds.

    • As Mayor he will be expected to have a visible presence at such events, to demonstrate the inclusive nature of London. This is not the same as a personal endorsement.

  7. I agree with Paul, I would say the same and do say the same when a “Christian” shows up at one of these hedonistic events. I have never been to one, but from what I understand they are pretty bad, at least the ones in the states.

Wow an Islamophobe agreeing with a Muslim. Whats next cats and dogs living together in perfect harmony.
