We prefer bigamy to duplicity.

  1. i’d be interested to know how many of the multiple wives are first widows, prostitutes or older women. Do you know Paul?

  3. Polygamy includes polyandry (when a woman is married to more than one husband at a time). Is this too preferable to duplicity?

      That is a great point.

It’s also gross that the fat slob in the photo has two wives who like fourteen-year-olds.

    • Paul,
If polygyny (when a man is married to more than one wife at a time) were to become widely practiced a likely consequence would be that many young males would be unable to find a wife. This would be likely to lead to social unrest (e.g. hormone fuelled disorder perpetrated by frustrated young males). One solution would be polyandry, but you have excluded this. What solution(s) do you propose?

    • Do not worry Andy, it had never been widely practiced as few can afford to maintain up to 4 wives.

    • So no problems as long as the society remains poor. And what about if the wives support themselves by going out to work?

    • In Islam the man is traditionally the breadwinner and the wife is in charge of the domestic realm and the care of the children.

But Muhammad’s first wife was a successful business woman. So both are options though the former is normative

    • Paul,
Thanks for your explanation of the division of responsibilities between man and wife in a Muslim household.
But I’m still concerned that polygyny could lead to social unrest. You replied that it has never been widely practiced as not many men could afford to maintain up to 4 wives. This may have been the case in the past with higher levels of poverty, but in parts of the modern world many men can afford to maintain more than 1 wife. In fact in some middle class households it could be financially efficient as there would presumably be less expenditure on nannies, cooks, cleaners etc as these roles would perhaps be undertaken by the older of the wives whilst the younger ones are busy with childbirth.
So I think my original point stands, that were polygyny to become acceptable (in a reasonably wealthy society) there would be a class of young males who would be unable to find a partner in marriage – thus leading to frustration and potentially social disorder. What solutions would Islam propose to deal with this?

    • I think your dystopian anxieties are not founded on the real world. 99% of Muslim marriages are monogamous. I don’t see this changing in the future.

  4. I wouldn’t want more than one wife. My wife is Hispanic, and if I had four versions of her I swear I’d go crazy.
