A great talk…

Professor Ovamir Anjum believes that the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant is heretical and run by poorly educated imams stating that “their claim of being a caliphate is a joke” and that “If you’re actually learned in the Islamic tradition you would know that these people are heretics. It’s like saying the KKK is Christian.”

‘This talk argued that it is crucial to understand and critique the phenomenon of ISIS from within Islamic tradition, and explored its meaning for the history and future of Islam. This requires us to mobilize the disciplines of usul al-fiqh, theology, and history, and to dismantle simplistic but widespread answers that cloud meaningful understanding and response.’

  1. Ok, those are valid points from Muslims who disagree with ISIS . . .

but how did Abu Bakr Baghdadi get a Phd. in Islam, if he is so “poorly educated” ??

      I say;
Bart Erhman has a PhD in Christianity and a professor in NT and he reject Christianity and so is Dr. Jerald Dirks who rejected Christianity and converted to Islam.

Dr. Graig Considine is a Christian and has Islamic qualifications and is independent and reject what Baghdadi is doing and calls it unIslamic. You accuse Dr. John L. Esposito as a stooge of Saudi and his academic outfit will not allow a sway in their academic ethics. Is Dr. Considine, a Christian who teaches Islamic studies at university and disproves David, Sam, Nabeel on their un academic rants on Islam also getting money from Saudi Arabia?
Is Paul Williams getting money from Saudi Arabia?

Dr. William Lane Graig is a Christian philosopher and scholar and described Trinity as a Hollywood avatar and 3 headed do of hades. You will not agree with him. How do you want us to agree with Al-Baghdadi because he has PhD?

You can be a very learned person but your satanic “feelings” and “experience” can lead you astray like Al-Baghdadi, William Lane Graig and you Ken.

      Thanks.

      That’s a good point!

I was not saying that Al Baghdadi is “the one true version of Islam”; only that he uses Islamic texts to back up what he is doing. But, I think his claim to being Caliph is weak; although I don’t know how anyone can really know who could qualify as a legitimate Caliph nowadays.

    • Temple: but how did Abu Bakr Baghdadi get a Phd…

Where did he get his PhD from? When did he get his degree? What was his dissertation on? Who were his supervisors?

If you don’t know the answers to these questions, then stop saying he is a scholar.

    • The news reports (and wikipedia article) say he got a BA, MA, and Phd in Baghdad, at either the Islamic University in Bagdad or University of Baghdad.

But who knows for sure? Those are the general reports out there.

But the scholar above in the video does say things like one of the views of understanding them is that they are an extreme form of Salafi-Wahabism with Apocalyptic Sunni traditions and followers of Ibn Taymiyyah (who lived from 1263 – 1328 AD).

  2. Professor Ovamir Anjum says at the beginning that ISIS includes Islamic traditions, ideological and political views of Saddam Hussein (Saddam 2.0), Al Qaeda, Apocalyptic traditions from Sunni Islam, Wahabism and Salafi principles.

  4. Isis may be described as terrorists, takfiri, following many Sunni traditions, territorial, Apocalyptic, ideological, Political, Saddam Hussein 2. 0, Wahabism and Salafi, etc.

Takfiri – calling other Muslims non-Muslims and Kuffar.

He says all these descriptions are unhelpful.

  5. I doubt if he has any. Islamophobes like ken are so much blinded by their hate that they all readily gloss over the atrocities of their co religionists.
Or as usual with ken to denounce such atrocities as being carried out by people who do not represent Christianity, his OWN version of Christianity, of course the Muslims can’t have such liberty because al Baghdadaadee had a PhD.
Would you grow up Ken ?

    • look, you are in a land which used jesus and old testament to destroy and remove a people from existence. you even killed of their language and replaced it with a European one. you were using jesus’ open ended statements like “compel them to come in….”
christians figured out that the parables could be actualised , so don’t try the bs “it was a parable…”
christians noted that jesus was not always practising what he preached and praised prophets who killed infants and non-virgins.

history does not lie and the bible was used to justify killing and slavery.

you cherry picked verses about “co-existence” were interpreted to suit the interpretations which justified killing and slavery.

  6. This one by the same professor looks to be 20 minutes longer – maybe has some more information.
The other one does not seem to come to any conclusion.
    Basically, he said,
    ISIS has been described as:
    1. Wahabism – Salafism taken to next level of extreme practice.
    2. Poltical, ideological – “Saddam 2.0”
    3. Khaurajite – خوارج – “outsiders” – the most extreme – the ones that killed Ali in early days of Sunni – Shiite split.
    4. Apocalyptic traditions from Sunni traditions

But, maybe I missed something, but he did not seem to come to any conclusion.

Maybe this video has more info, since it is about 20 mintues longer.

    • at the 46 minute mark, the professor said, “the idea that this is a political-secular thing vs religious thing, this is not a sufficient explanation.”

      earlier –

He compares them (ISIS) to the terror of the French Revolution, Robespierre

and the Safavid Revolution in Persia in the 1500s when the king of Persia decided they would be Shiite (12er Imams)
      and
the Mahdi movement in Maqreb (Morocco) in 1500s – 1600s

  7. Ken,

The structure of Iraq was so debilitated by wars, sanctions, and sectarian civil war, an alleged Phd there is not worth much.
