Christian Missionaries and the Pakistani Village Council that Ordered Rape

It’s sad to see what effectively comes across as opportunistic Christian missionaries blurring the lines between ignorant practices by some in a backwater in the Muslim world with Islam via irresponsible tweets. In a climate of Islamophobia, folks need to be careful to distinguish between Islam and illegal “traditional” village council actions.

These village councils ordering the rape of women as punishment for offences committed by family members are not being Islamic.

The renowned Saudi scholar, Sheikh Muhammad Saleh Al-Munajjid, condemns the act of rape and describes it as a CRIME which is FORBIDDEN and punishable:

This is an abhorrent crime that is forbidden in all religions and in the minds of all wise people and those who possess sound human nature. All earthly systems and laws regard this action as abhorrent and impose the strictest penalties on it.

Islam has a clear stance which states that this repugnant action is haram (forbidden) and imposes a deterrent punishment on the one who commits it [Source]

Sheikh Faraz Rabbani:

However, it is a myth to say that Islam would in any way condone rape, or allow a rapist to go free for this terrible crime against an innocent human being and against society

Sheikh Hamza Yusuf  states rape is oppression and injustice:

The rapist oppresses by taking advantage of the physical weakness of his victim. Oppression is a form of injustice, and injustice always occurs from an abuse of power, hidden or manifest. [The Prayer of the Oppressed, Hamza Yusuf,Sandala Productions, 2010, Kindle Loc. 175]

Police in Pakistan have arrested 26 members of a village council for allegedly ordering the rape of a teenager as punishment for a sexual assault committed by her brother.

The girl, 17, was raped last week at the direction of the council as revenge for a sexual assault allegedly committed two days earlier against a child in the same village by the teenage girl’s brother.

The man who was ordered to rape the teenager was the brother of the initial victim, local police official Malik Rashid said.

…The village councils, or jirgas, are a traditional means of settling disputes in Pakistan’s rural areas, where the legal system can be mistrusted or out of reach. [Guardian]

  1. Missionaries that proffer such arguments and accusations against Islam, are really digging at the “bottom of the barrel” and looking to make anything stick. Such childish and petty arguments are unconvincing and always easily proven baseless and wrong.
