Yusuf Ismail is an attorney from South Africa, a public speaker and debater on religion and contemporary society who has debated many prominent Christian apologists and philosophers. He initiated contact with me requesting I post the following email correspondence on Blogging Theology. I am happy to oblige.
Some background context:
In a recent post I mentioned my brief meeting with the American missionary Nabeel Qureshi. I asked him about an issue that has been poisoning Muslim/Christian relations for a number of years now: the behaviour of fellow American missionary Sam Shamoun who has a shocking history of bullying, vilification and extremist hate speech against Muslims. Qureshi claimed (contrary to massive evidence) that Sam Shamoun has a “loving heart” towards Muslims (!). Nevertheless, there is a very widespread concern about the lack of public condemnation or rebuke from other Christian evangelists. In White’s email to Yusuf Ismail below White called on Shamoun “to apologize to Yusuf for the language and attitude you displayed in your emails.” and to adopt a biblical and Christian approach to dialogue and debate. Credit to James White for doing the right thing.
The highlighted words in bold and red are James White’s own.

Subject: Proper Apologetic Interaction
I am writing to Yusuf Ismail and Sam Shamoun, and am adding, as my chosen witness to my words, and as one who can testify as to my heart and behavior in these matters, my dear brother in Christ, Rudolph Bushoff.
Just a few moments ago I received an email from Yusuf Ismail relating to communication between himself and Sam Shamoun regarding, from what I could gather, a proposed ABN debate (please correct me if I am wrong).
The listed email for Sam is correct, so I am going to assume the materials sent to me are accurate. Again, I will stand corrected if I am mistaken in this.
Let me begin by saying that the “easy” road for me would be to plead time pressures–and, in fact, I could do so pretty easily and fairly. But I simply cannot pass over this matter.
I was very disappointed this past October by what happened in Durban, South Africa. I have expressed my displeasure to Yusuf Ismail as to his presentations, forms of argumentation, and the general interaction we had at that time. I was so disheartened that I concluded there was no reason to continue to make the effort to debate Mr. Ismail due to what had taken place.
However, while I objected to what Mr. Ismail did in the two debates we had, it is plain that Yusuf did not engage in abusive ad-hominem. He did not act petulantly toward me in any way. He remained kind and gracious in our personal conversations.
If the emails forwarded to me this morning are accurate I must, as an elder in a Christian congregation, as a Christian leader and as one who seeks to bring the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ to all men, and to the dear Muslim people in particular, seek to bring correction to the situation presented before me.
Sam, you know more about Islam, the Qur’an, the Hadith, etc., than anyone else I’ve encountered. There is no question of your encyclopedic knowledge of things Islamic. And I am well aware of your Assyrian heritage and culture, and how your people are—not known for being politically correct.
But as you also know, Sam, biblically speaking, the Holy Spirit brings to us discipline, a sound mind (σωφρονισμός), and self-control. Likewise, we are commanded in Scripture to “speak the truth in love” (ἀληθεύοντες δὲ ἐν ἀγάπῃ); that we are to sanctify (ἁγιάσατε) or set apart, treat as holy, the Messiah as Yahweh in our hearts as the necessary prerequisite to giving a defense of the faith (πρὸς ἀπολογίαν, 1 Peter 3:15); and that we are to always speak with grace, ὁ λόγος ὑμῶν πάντοτε ἐν χάριτι (Col. 4:6). This is all the more necessary when we are representing the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, Jesus the Messiah, exalted at the right hand of the Father, to whom all authority has been given in heaven and earth. The more our own emotions, our own self-interest, is expressed, the less will be seen of the One we represent.
The emails sent to me mirror the language I have heard in PalTalk discussions and even in Facebook postings where I regularly see accusations of cowardice, dishonesty, etc. Likewise, use of unnecessarily offensive language was everywhere present—language that clearly functions only to inflame, not to communicate let alone honor the truth. I realize that in some cultures this is considered “part of argumentation,” but cultural standards are, for Christians, subject to biblical correction.
I would be horrifically inconsistent, Sam, if I did not call you to apologize to Yusuf for the language and attitude you displayed in your emails. It is not compromise to be consistent with obedience to Christ’s commands. Whether you think Yusuf was dissembling or not does not matter. Christians are called to a higher standard. As for me, I pray for Yusuf that he would be the recipient of God’s grace, and that our glorious Lord would shine “the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ” in his heart (2 Corinthians 4:5). I do not want to be a stumbling block for the gospel in Yusuf’s life. I am sure you do not want to either, and hence know you will hear my words of exhortation and will, before formulating a response, consider the texts I have cited above prayerfully, asking the Holy Spirit to give you insight and obedience to Him.
Yusuf, allow me to say that I have not been perfect in my seeking to follow Christ in my life and in all my interactions with Muslims. I am still being conformed to the image of Christ, and hence at times my ego and pride display themselves. But I truly testify to you that I seek to follow my Lord in all things, and seek to be used as an instrument of His grace and peace in the lives of Muslim people, and yourself in particular. While many a Muslim expresses his or her disdain and disrespect for me and for Christians in general, I refuse to respond in kind, and seek to consistently live a life of loving service in subjection to Christ and in service to the Muslim people. Yes, we believe we are serving the Muslim people by seeking to communicate the gospel with clarity to them. I ask forgiveness for the times when I, or my fellow followers of Christ, get in the way of His light.
James White

Today I received the following message from Yusuf Ismail sadly informing me that Sam Shamoun had not apologized and his abusive behaviour continues unchanged:
(There are further emails I have decided not to publish from Yusuf Ismail so as to keep this post to a manageable size.)

Hahaha! Man you really are desperate. Care to publish my response to this if I post it here, or will you ban me again like the good Muhammadan that you are? 😉

Yusuf Ismail is waiting for your apology. Tell me: why do you ignore James White’s sensible advise to you to behave as a decent & honourable Christian?

Williams, you mean the same Tusuf whom I exposed for his vitriol, calling me s bastard among other things? That thug? BTW Nabeel let me in on your emotional rant, trying to liken me to the Nazis. Boy that was hilarious. You truly do need psychological analysis and therapy.
Now will you post my response that I gave White or will you refuse to publish it?

Shamoun, what did happen to Nageen Mayel? Is she still Christian or was she going through a phase?

Dear Sam,
I think it’s unfair for everyone to judge you in light of your misgivings. I happen to know that you’re quite a kind and loving person. It’s just unfortunate that all this negative attention surrounds you.
You’re just as misunderstood as Sergius Paulus was. Hopefully you won’t share the same end as he did.
Regards,
Br. Ijaz Ahmad.

BTW Williams, my invitation still remains for you to come and discuss what NT sccholarship teaches concerning Christology. I can even ask Jonathan to have you share with his apologetics group. Are you interested?

Bang out of order. Those insults towards Negeen are disgraceful. Attacking the brave young lady’s character just because she walked away and spoke out. Disgusting.
PS White needs to stop with his low-level bigotry in blaming the guy’s culture for his bad behaviour. I have no clue what ‘culture’ considers those insults part of argumentation. shamoun is a product of American culture, the same culture as White. Sadly, I doubt Shamoun has the fortitude to stand up to such b elittlement from White. At least Christian Prince stands up to those swipes at his culture. How a grown man can allow somebody to belittle their ‘culture’ like that, the same culture as his parents and kids is beyond me. Have some self respect!
The fact the guy attacks the young lady behind her back while allowing himself to debased and humiliated by White on an ethnic level just shows the man lacks class and fortitude. He picks on soft targets and cowers in the corner when somebody bigger than him comes along. One thing I can respect in people is the ability to stand up for themselves. I see that ability in Paul, ijaz, Christian Prince and many others.
Shamoun needs to develop a backbone and self-respect as well as a more mature and classy outlook.
PS I’m ticked off after seeing those disgusting comments against Negeen but I stand by everything I said in this comment.

Hi Sam,
In regard to your comment, kindly see:
In your case, it isn’t irony, it’s double irony. As for who I am, the answer is simple: I am, who I am. Thank you for trying to label me though, it’s quite kind of you to be this charitable.

Dr. James White. Please for God’s sake spare us with the untruth that Sam Shamoun knows Islam. I respect you Dr. James White because you will not use material from Aayan Ali Hirsi or Irshad Manji’s book for your scholarly works as Graig Evans did. You never cited Sam Shamoun in your books on Islam, so you knew it is a joke to cite Sam Shamoun because he is not a qualified Islamic student or scholar.
Sam Shamoun, Nabeel Quraish, Ergun Carner, Walid Shoebat, Christian Prince etc. are all collecting money from Christians to tell them what they want to hear about Islam but they do not have any Islamic qualifications and most do not know classical Arabic and many things necessary to understand the Quran.
Sam Shamoun has no qualification or any evidence of sitting in an academic class or basic certificate in Islam or Christianity or any technical or trade certifications.
We do not say Yusuf Estes, Khalid Yasin, the late Taufiq Iddris who was an ordained Catholic priest, Yvonne Ridley(Taliban’s prisoner), Lauren Booth(Tony Blair sister in law) etc. are expert in Christianity because they have converted from Christianity to Islam. No one says that. Some of them, some times do talk about the 2 religions and that does not mean they are experts in Christian religion.
Dr. Jerald Dirks and Dr. Lawrence Brown who are converts to Islam have credentials in Christianity and their books on Christianity is interesting to read. Shabbir Ally too has credentials in Christianity and he knows the Bible from his Christian professors.
Sam Shamoun do not have qualification in Islam, so you Dr. James White will do yourself a favour in not depending on him but depend on non-Muslims like John Esposito of Georgetown University who is a Christian and an Islamic scholar and understands the Quranic Arabic.
He will tell you that Sam Shamoun, Nabeel Quraish, David Wood, Robert Spencer are dreaming about Islam for their whims and caprice.
I appreciate your advice to Sam Shamoun and may Lord Jesus Christ bless you. Sam Shamoun is not an Islamic scholar, so you as an elder and debater learning Islam from him is not the best for you.
Thanks.

YahyaSlime, we will see if I was insulting Negeen or whether she is being used by slime like yourself to lie and slander people just as soon as I have the people who personally took Negeen in and cared for her respond to the emails which will come back to implode in your deceitful, slandering faces. In the meantime, keep pretending to be Negeen’s friend since I am going to have a field day with you once the real truth comes out. 😉

OK folks, that is enough. I had hoped Sam would show some decency and repent of his sinful behaviour as James White told him to. It would take a miracle to save Sam from himself and safeguard others from his abusive behaviour. Let’s pray that the miracle happens soon…
