Contrary to Adam Deen and the Quilliam Foundation the basic thesis is one of trying to make the human order conform to the Divine norm, not visa-versa. To speak of the Shari’ah as being simply the laws of the seventh century fixed in time and not relevant today would be like telling Christians that the injunctions of Christ to love ones neighbour and not commit adultery were simply laws of the Palestine of two thousand years ago and not relevant today, or telling Jews not to keep the Sabbath because it is an outmoded practice of three thousand years ago!

It is a sign of hypocrisy to try to conform the divine law to human standards. Adam Deen and others are simply trying to appease non-Muslims by trying to change certain aspects of Islam that they do not find palatable.

He’s just a layman and has failed to express his opinion correctly. At least I hope that to be the case.
What he should have said was that ‘fiqh’ is a human endevaor. Since fiqh is a human effort attempting to interpret the Shari’ah, and the way we interpret the Shari’ah is indeed up for discussion.

Yeah I think he is trying to say something similar to what Ghazali wrote above

Was Islam ever truly rational? Is it possible for such a far-fetched collection of fables to ever truly be called rational?

as an atheist you are of course prejudiced against God’s Word.

Try me.
You are reaching by saying I am prejudiced against “god’s word” – that is the problem. YOU have to establish beyond a reasonable doubt that your occasionally incomprehensible book is of divine origin. My only prejudice is against flimsy and absurd claims that merely assert divine origin merely because that happens to be the religion you have chosen to dumb yourself down for.

lol you are sooo funny. Every word you utter drips crude prejudice. Just can’t take you seriously dude.

John it’s difficult to have a fruitful discussion on the basis of the vague statement that the Quran is occasionally incomprehensible. Perhaps, you could be more specific and start by pinpointing some of things you think are incomprehensible.

Little John masquerades as a “rational” person, but after having several conversations with the guy, it’s obvious to me that he is the exact opposite. At this point, I just respond to his babble just to get a few laughs.
