A slight difference of opinion between Pope and God

As the Pope condemns the death penalty again I am reminded of God’s express will on this issue. In the Torah (Genesis 9:5-6) we read,

“And I will require the blood of anyone who takes another person’s life. If a wild animal kills a person, it must die. And anyone who murders a fellow human must die. If anyone takes a human life, that person’s life will also be taken by human hands. For God made human beings in his own image.

Even the New Testament teaches that capital punishment is one of the options available to the civil magistrate in punishing evildoers (Romans 13:1-7). So the Pope overrules God?

They have taken their scholars and monks as lords besides Allah, and also the Messiah, the son of Mary. And they were not commanded except to worship one God; there is no deity except Him. Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him.

  1. But at least the Pope is not attacking Islam like many other Christians. They change their religion and attack Islam for not being like their changed religion.

  2. Pope is wrong, it wouldn’t be the first time a Pope is wrong either. I think the Quranic verse that you cited refers to veneration of saints, not a theologian or bishop being wrong. That seems to fall into context with the two preceding verses.

  3. I agree with you Paul – Genesis 9:5-6 and Romans 13 are clear. I remember Pope John Paul 2 being very much against the death penalty.

this Pope has made many off the cuff statements that are contradictory to RC teaching and tradition.

the most recent one about most of the RC marriages being invalid and void was a whopper.
and about homosexuality: “who am I to judge”
and about capitalism and global warming, etc.

I know the conservative Roman Catholics will say that his statements like these are off the cuff are not ex cathedra and therefore not infallible; but what good is their claim of a “living voice” when the “living voice” keeps making statements like this?

    • Mr. Temple, I’m curious, where in any official Church documents is the claim that the Pope is a “living voice”?

    • that’s a good question; mostly Roman Catholic Apologists make the claim that the Pope can solve all disunity problems between Protestants and can walk into a room and say “thus says the Lord” and be the “living voice” of God on earth (vicar) and give the right interpretation of difficult issues where there is disagreement and solve disunity. Rod Bennett and Tim Staples have made that claim; and there are others but those 2 I can definitely say have said that.

  4. Hello,

The problems of disunity are solved when the Pope defines a Doctrine to be believed for all time. Sometimes it can be well over a hundred years between definitions. I have a request, please define our faith based on the documents. This is exactly what James White does, he makes his own caricature of Catholicism and mocks it based on that. I hope that my Protestant opponents will be able to rise above that and actually respond to our documents and not these cut and paste definitions. Many actually do rise above this but in James White’s circles there is no proper response. James White is no different than the popular Catholic apologists he responds to – Tim Staples, Steve Ray, etc.

  5. I’m not Catholic – I’m a Methodist. But, I think Jesus taught us another way, and that is AGAINST capital punishment. Matthew 5:38-41, 38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; 40 and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; 41 and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile.

    • in my view Jesus is teaching about personal relations with others not the Mosaic law which he upheld elsewhere.

    • Quran 5:45 “And We ordained therein for them: Life for life, eye for eye, nose for nose, ear for ear, tooth for tooth and wounds equal for equal. **But if anyone remits the retaliation by way of charity, it shall be for him an expiation**. And whosoever does not judge by that which Allah has revealed, such are the Zalimun (polytheists and wrongdoers)
