The hijab describes the whole covering of Muslim women. It is not only the headscarf. So you’re right that there are problems with the ways some or many Muslim women dress today with the headscarf.
I don’t know what south-east Asian non-Muslims used to wear but Western women had the veil and it was based on Christianity while your culture is probably based on the south-east Asian pagan tradition even after converting. So you should have more respect to the people who brought you your religion and not call their cultural clothing dumb.

If I remember what some Muslims tell me, a true hijabi is one who begins in the heart not the outside. I just saw a post here recently about Allah looking at the hearts of individuals not the external appearance. Likewise, in 1 Samuel 16:7 God rejected all of David’s older brothers as kings and said a similar thing, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart”
I know many Muslim women who wear hijabs who have poor characters and some who commit grave sins despite their attire, likewise I also know many Muslim women who wear no hijabs and are of good character. That observation goes for men and women alike all over the world, regardless of religion, race or background.
I would prefer a woman who has a good character over the clothes that she wears any day. That isn’t to say I’m condoning people to run around the streets naked just because they’re nice people but that it doesn’t make a big difference whether a woman wears a hijab or not if it does nothing to change her.
The hijab should be default. Based on this we can talk about what else is there.
Please also note that a woman that does not cover herself cannot have a good character. I don’t necessarily mean covering the hair but the other important parts of the body when we talk about non-Muslim women since it would be weird for them to cover their hair.

Yes, you are right, good character is more important than clothes, but clothes do communicate something about who we are inside and what we believe in. Yes, God does look into our hearts, and judges our mindful intention, but likewise, our actions are judged as well. The action of dressing modestly and wearing Hijab, is in itself an act of worship and is a symbol and a reminder of al-hayah, and dignity and ones commitment to abiding by the commandments of Allah. The woman has a covering outside the context of worship. She just needs an extra covering for worship to reflect the redemptive order of things.

The hijab should be default. Based on this we can talk about what else is there.
Please also note that a woman that does not cover herself cannot have a good character. I don’t necessarily mean covering the hair but the other important parts of the body when we talk about non-Muslim women since it would be weird for them to cover their hair.

Therefore, Hijab is a default position of someone who strives to please God. Wearing Hijab does not preclude the possibility of sin, Muslims are people too, and we all make mistakes. We all have different levels and stations, but we should each strive to compete with each other in improving our piety. If a person falls in to sin after or while wearing Hijab, that is between them and Allah, and he is all forgiving, of those who turn to him in repentance Alhamdulillah.
Yes, you are right, good character is more important than clothes, but clothes do communicate something about who we are inside and what we believe in. One who wears hijab communicates respect for self, family, community, society, tradition, culture, religion, co-religionists, and ultimately respect for God.
Yes, God does look into our hearts, and judges our mindful intention, but likewise, our actions are judged as well. The action of dressing modestly and wearing Hijab, is in itself an act of worship and is a symbol and a reminder of al-hayah, and dignity and ones commitment to abiding by the commandments of Allah. Therefore one who is wearing Hijab is constantly self reminded that Allah is watching and therefore it is best refrain from committing sin in the first place.

What a twisted question. Making women responsible for men’s sexual conduct in this way is a disgrace. It also insinuates that women who don’t use veils are sluts and that men are too weak to control themselves.

I prefer to believe that the she was honoring herself and her God, by dressing modestly in obedience to the commandments.

I think that is an unfair inference on your part.
I just see it as saying without the hijab (note hijab here is holistic modest dress sense and not just a head covering) one will be afflicted by more undesirable attention.

Everyone has to control oneself to not do drugs. But does that mean that we should tolerate someone doing it in front of us?
A pious woman does cover herself. Period. She does it for her own chastity in the first place. Your problem is simply that women in your family are probably not dressed very modestly like most women anyway. You cannot call them what they are for it but you will attack Islam in order to legitimise this perversion.
