An interesting question
Published on 23 Jan 2017
Rabbi Tovia Singer responds to a stunning question: Why did the family of Jesus think that he was ‘out of his mind’ if Mary was informed by the Angel Gabriel, Elizabeth, the Shepherds, and Simmion that Jesus is the Son of God?

quote :
Some translations mistakenly change what the Greek says by rendering that last bit “for the people were saying….” That’s not what the Greek says. These translators have added the word “people” for a clear and compelling (to them) reason though: otherwise Mary his mother thinks that Jesus has gone crazy.

Interesting. If that is the case it is good example of textual corruption.

There is another way to look at this.
It appears that whoever wrote Mark had an agenda to portray the family and companions of Jesus in a very negative light.
In this passage Mary and Jesus’ family are shown as thinking he had become mad.
If you read Mark, you will be left with a very very poor impression of his disciples.
I think it is possible that the author deliberately depicts the family and companions of Jesus in a poor light because his companions and relatives such as James had a different understanding about Jesus than he did.
This can also be seen in Galatians where Paul whose understanding is closer to Mark’s understanding speaks of people who believe in a “different Jesus” meaning an understanding of Jesus that is very different from his own. In the same work Paul calls out men sent by James as his opponents.

As Jesus may be some kind of “split-brain patient” maybe it runs in the family …

I think Singer is the one who is out of his mind here.
Mark 3 v 20 And the multitude cometh together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread. 21 And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.
At this point his family are not present at the scene.
They arrive after his friends have made the comment that Jesus is beside himself:
31 There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him.
Then Singer goes on and on in the video waxing lyrical about his non-argument. The guy should see a shrink if you ask me.

The fact Jesus’ own Mother and brothers had severe concerns that Jesus had gone crazy out of his mind tells you that his own mother understood Jesus to be purely a human being… otherwise if his own mother understood Jesus to be God incarnate then makes absolutely no sense for Mum and brothers to be concerned about God incarnate is up to lol…
