We Need To Talk About Racism

Having just listened to the comments of Shaykh Hamza Yusuf I thought what he said was above reproach. He courageously spoke about the massively disproportionate black on black crime statistics and how it is wrong to assume always that the police are racist.

I am saddened to see this witch-hunt against him.

I have wanted to put something together on the subject of ‘racism’ for some time having seen and personally been involved in some discussions and disagreements on this topic. One of the reasons for writing this article now is this issue has been widely discussed recently due to some comments made by Sheikh Hamza Yusuf at a conference, which I will analyse and address later. Racism, (if you pardon the pun) is not a black and white issue and I wanted to tackle this from various angles but more specifically in relation to the Islamic perspective and that which affects Muslim community itself.

Before I share my thoughts and opinions on the subject, I will put out a disclaimer: Everyone has an opinion on the subject of racism and not everyone shares the same view or even the definition of what racism is. Therefore, I do not expect everyone to…

  1. It was as though I was speaking a different language in trying to explain to the mob that you can’t call SHY racist based on those comments. They weren’t having it.
Evidently trying to reason with a mob whose feelings have been hurt because SHY didn’t say exactly what they wanted him to say is a difficult task.

  2. Still not getting this, SHY (as you say) made a truthful statement although he was way off on the numbers of Black on Black murders. I think its closer to 80 percent. However his statement was truthful in that this is the problem. So how was his comments racist? I mean its not like he was a white middle aged Christian saying those things. Then I could see how it would be racist.

    • Yahya not understanding you reply. Are you saying if there where more black Muslims, SHY’s comments would not be considered racist?

Sorry, yeah I don’t understand my comment either after re-reading your initial comment.

The hazard of impulsive responses on the mobile whilst working.

Yeah I think SHY raised good points for discussion. The problem here is that people interpreted it as him dismissive the other problem of injustice Black Americans are facing right now.

Dr Ali Ataie shared a response recently (on his FB) from a sheikh who knows SHY personally. I skimmed it – looks like a beneficial read calling for more balance. Check that out if you want more commentary on SHY and this social media storm around him of late.

However, I’m finding it difficult to ascertain which direction you’re coming from here. I’m in a rush – got to shower and head off to the mosque. I get the feeling you think SHY is guilty of some form of racism? Forgive me if I’ve misjudged you.

My response: No at I’m really at a loss as to why people are calling him a racist and or equating what he said as a “racist rant”.

I could see if he was a middle aged white Christian like James White who made similar observations and was called a bigot and racist and his remarks labeled bigoted and racist.

But you said something very interesting that I would like to hear more on.

      You said…
“The problem here is that people interpreted it as him dismissive the other problem of injustice Black Americans are facing right now. ”

Can you tell me what “injustice Black Americans are facing right now”? Can you give a few examples?

Yeah sure, black Americans face institutional racism and there have been incidents of police injustice against black Americans.

As for James White this is not the same. And no I did not call him a racist based on those comments. James, if you recall, saw a 15 yr old black kid littering and flipped no off cops as they drove by and he went in on him on FB. There was no need to mention the kid’s colour – a KID littering and stick a finger up at cops as they drove by is not really even rant worthy in today’s society. But it was black Christians who pulled him up in that iirc. They spoke about his comments being insensitive. Some of them may have called him racist. I don’t know. I do think I made a comment telling at least one of his detractors that James’ rant was NOT racist.

Can you name one instance of this “institutial racism”? Is becoming a two term president “institutional racism”?
While we are on that subject can a Christian of what ever race become the head of an Islamic country?

What about CEO of Microsoft, or Merck & Company, or American Express, or Xerox etc.. is that “institutional racism”?

Acceptance into every university in the US? Is that “institutional racism”

You also wrote… “there have been incidents of police injustice against black Americans.”

Did you even listen to what SHY said? There are more whites killed by cops then blacks. So does that mean there is “institutional racism”
      against white people?
Can you give an example of one those cases in the last 5 years? I’m sure that have been but just because there are a few
bad cops does not mean there is “institutional racism”. Funny how you say not to judge Muslims by the actions of a few
but then you JUDGE an entire nation by the actions of a few bad cops lol.

You wrote… “As for James White this is not the same.” Of course not even though Dr White said
basically the same thigns that SHY said, James White is white and worse he is a CHRISTIAN lol.

The only one who is showing any kind of racism and bigotry is YOU. Your racist against White Christians.

I’m glad you support the black lives matter movement.

I don’t know about the politics of Muslim countries but Obama is not Muslim (is he not a Christian who goes to church?) and he is also mixed race. Just because a mixed race guy becomes president it doesn’t mean there’s no racism in America at an institutional level. It was illegal to have mixed race marriages in America only a few decades ago and black ppl had to use different wash rooms and water fountains back then.

Do you really think racism has disappeared in the matter of a generation or two in America?

And nope. I’m not racist against Christians, white Christians or otherwise. The Pope, Rick Warren and Joel Osteen are famous white Christians who I think many Muslims would find to be pretty supportive of Muslims.

    • Yahya funny I asked you to provide me some examples of how Blacks face Institutional Racism in the US and you failed to give one example. Instead you had to reach way back into the past when neither you or I where alive to dig up and example that was made illegal with the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights bill which ended “institutional racism”

      My response:

Where did you get the idea that I support a racist movement like Black Lives Matter?

BLM stands for BLUE LIVES MATTER as in Police Officers. I’m not a Muslim I do not support racist or lawlessness.

      Yahya wrote…

“I don’t know about the politics of Muslim countries”

Dishonest as usual I see. You’re a Muslim who wants Sharia law and you know that a Non Muslim can not be the leader of a Muslim nation.

You wrote..” Obama is not Muslim (is he not a Christian who goes to church?) and he is also mixed race. Just because a mixed race guy becomes president it doesn’t mean there’s no racism in America at an institutional level.”

Wow your racism really shows through on that one, “mixed race” really? I guess to a racist like you only a PURE blood Black man will do.

      You continue on…

“It was illegal to have mixed race marriages in America only a few decades ago and black ppl had to use different wash rooms and water fountains back then. ”

My response: A few decades ago? If by few you mean over 50 years ago then I agree, and it was with the passing of the civil rights bill over 50 years ago that ENDED “institutional racism”. Since institutions can not discriminate by race, creed, color etc…, and yet NON Muslims in this day and age and in any future Islamic paradise can never be the leader of a Muslim country. Thats institutional religious bigotry.

BTW how are black arabs or as Muslims call them Abeeds treated in Arabic Muslim countries?

      You continue…

“Do you really think racism has disappeared in the matter of a generation or two in America?”

My response: No but the question is not racism, the question is “institutional racism” which ended with the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Bill over 50 years ago. BTW “institutional religious bigotry” has never ended and can not end in Islamic countries.

      You continue…

“And nope. I’m not racist against Christians, white Christians or otherwise. The Pope, Rick Warren and Joel Osteen are famous white Christians who I think many Muslims would find to be pretty supportive of Muslims.”

My response: Oh no you are a racist that much is clear, thats why you support racist movements like Black Lives Matter. Its funny that you only named Heretics and false teaches as Christians that Muslims would find supportive lol.
