Philip Jenkins – Show Them No Mercy: Religion, Violence, and Scripture

If you think the Qur’an is the most violent scripture, think again. The Bible is by far the most violent book endorsing genocide and mass murder, as this top Christian historian candidly admits. And Christians are still committing genocide inspired by Bible texts. The lecture discusses some of them. Professor Philip Jenkins is the co-director of the Program of Historical Studies of Religion at Baylor University.

  1. The Quranic passages he mentions are about fighting in a war, those who fight you but stop fighting them when they stop fighting you.

So it’s no comparison to the biblical total extermination of the enemy without mercy.

    • Jenkin’s lecture is very simplistic and he leaves out key principles for understanding those OT passages for today.

Surahs 8-9 don’t say that. The don’t say only fight if you are first attacked. Surah 2:190-191 does say that but Surahs 8-9 are all out aggressive warfare revealed at the end of Muhammad’s life.

Surah 9:5 and 9:29 and 8:39 are all out aggressive warfare against non-Muslim territories; (9:29-30 says fight them for what they believe (people of the book, Al Masih is the Son of God; the Jews say Ezra is the Son of God, which they NEVER did; and don’t forbid (like pork and wine), etc.) and that is why Omar Ibn Al Khattab and most Caliphs after him started expanding the Islamic empire by aggressive war. Ibn Kathir’s commentary on Surah 9:28-29 explains why Omar and other attacked – because they no longer had revenue from pagans paying to come to the Kaaba. “If you fear poverty . . . Allah will reward you . . . fight the people of the book . . . . etc.

Whereas the passages that Dr. Jenkins talks about in the Bible (Deut. 7; Joshua 6; 1 Sam. 15) are the OT theocratic principle for Israel only and only for the promised land; and no longer apply since the new covenant, as Jesus took the kingdom of God away from Israel. Matthew 21:43-45

The new testament / new covenant abrogated those passages as applicable to anyone else. Roman Catholics, Popes, and some Protestants were wrong to invoke those passages for their warfare.

But some Hadith says that Surah 9 was the last Surah revealed. (some other Hadith say Surah 110 was last; and some Muslim scholars say that Surah 5:3 is the last verse revealed.

“Abu Ishaq said that he heard al-Bara’ b. ‘Azib (Allah be pleased with him) say:

The last complete sura revealed (in the Holy Qur’an) is Sura Tauba (i e. al-Bara’at, 9), and the last verse revealed is that pertaining to Kalala.” (Kalala is in Surah 4:176)

Jenkins leaves out a lot of understanding that:

The later New Covenant / New Testament fulfills the OT and abrogates /over-rules some verses/principles. For any Chrisitan to use those OT passages to justify war or genocide is wrong.

The later Surahs over rule earlier principles. Surah 8-9 make it understandable as to why some Muslims do what they do; but they violate the principle of having a legitimate Caliph that has Unified the Umma.

It is interesting that the Palestinian terrorists he named in the 1970s ( like George Habash) were Marxist – secularists, not Christians, and the organization George Habash was the leader of is a coalition with Muslims who are secularists/Marxists.

  2. Lies Paul. You know the biblical texts are limited to theocratic Israel. You, on the other hand think muhammad is the best example to follow. Taqqiyah at its finest
