Official Catholic Church teaching: Muslims worship the same God whom Christians and Jews worship

Muslims worship the same God whom Christians and Jews worship. The word Allah is the Arabic equivalent to the English word God. The word Allah is used by Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews as well as Muslims.screen-shot-2016-10-01-at-22-29-11

Nostra aetate (Latin: In our Time) is the Declaration on the Relation of the Church with Non-Christian Religions of the Second Vatican Council. Passed by a vote of 2,221 to 88 of the assembled bishops, this declaration was promulgated on October 28, 1965, by Pope Paul VI.

  1. The God of the bible’s personal name is YHWH. The god in the qur’an’s personal name is Allah.

The God of the bible is a Father to his creation and has a begotten Son.
The god of the qur’an is a father to no one and cannot have a begotten Son.

The God of the bible loves unconditionally.
The God of the qur’an loves only Muslims.

The God of the bible is personal.
The god of the qur’an is distant.

Now tell me, how can we be taking about the same God?

  2. God existed before the Hebrews and thier language. YHVH is only a Hebrew personal name in Hebrew scriptures for god who is not Hebrew but universal.

Allah is just the Arabic personal name of the Creator of the world used since from the pre-Islamic times by Arab Jews and Arab Christians along with all other Arabs for the same God to this day.

Linguistically, word is nothing but what it refers to. Both the Hebrew YHVH and the Arabic Allah refer to the same Creator of the world.

  3. God is figuratively described as Father by the Jews. This does not mean that if other people that don’t have that figure in their language, or are cautious against misunderstanding it to be literal, don’t describe Him as Father, then it means they refer to different God.

God does not love sinners in both the Qur’an and the Bible.

Psalm 5:5, “The boastful shall not stand before Thine eyes; Thou dost hate all who do iniquity,”

Leviticus 20:23, “Moreover, you shall not follow the customs of the nation which I shall drive out before you, for they did all these things, and therefore I have abhorred them.”

Hosea 9:15, “All their evil is at Gilgal; indeed, I came to hate them there! Because of the wickedness of their deeds I will drive them out of My house! I will love them no more; All their princes are rebels.”

  4. Allah says:

“And when My servants question thee concerning Me, then surely I am nigh. I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he crieth unto Me. So let them hear My call and let them trust in Me, in order that they may be led aright.” (Qur’an 2: 186)

“And indeed We have created man, and We know whatever thoughts his inner self develops, and We are closer to him than (his) jugular vein.” (Quran 50:16).

God who is so much near, close, to his human creatures could not rightly be described as “distant”!

  5. @Aliyu,

who said “God is figuratively described as Father by the Jews.”

If one is figurative so is the other. The father and son are either both real or they are both figurative as I my limited understanding goes. The only way they could be figurative, as I see it, would be in a parable or suchlike where they don’t actually exist in real life. But this is obviously not the case between God and Israel.

Maybe I am wrong but this claim that God is just a figurative Father in the OT doesn’t stand up to logical scrutiny.

It seems to depend on the narrow definition of father which Islam has of someone who begets physically.

If Father is not figurative then Father is literal. God is not literal Father to anyone and God is not both figurative or literal Son to anyone.

Anyone who is Son is not God. It is blaspheme to claim Jesus(Son) no matter how you understand Son to be God.

If is not only Islam that understand Father and Son literally is not God but Christians too from the first century till today. Jews and any rational person knows that a literal Father or a Son is not God. So, stop erroneously thinking it is Islam but it is Trinitarians who have narrow definition of Father and Son.

Father, Son, begotten means what they means and changing them like begotten not made is a lie and cannot help Christians.

Begotten is always made and any one who is a Son is not God. Trinitarians will not accept Hindus cow or elephants as God because Hindus are saying the cows and elephants are incarnated cows and elephants as cow God or elephant Gods as the Trinitarians believe God can in someone enters into his creations to love men. How can the Trinitarians force us to accept their blaspheme of God-Man if they will not accept other God Men?

      Thanks.

Never realized they had a gun pointed at your head. Call the cops, immediately, if they do it again.

Well, I think it depends to some degree on what the elephants and cows have to say about it. Have you consulted them? How do they feel about being messiahs and saviors? I mean, I think their opinions should be taken into account, don’t you?

      P.S, What about chimpanzees?

  6. But Zion said, “The LORD has forsaken me, And the Lord has forgotten me.” “Can a woman forget her nursing child And have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, but I will not forget you. “Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands…”

  7. While there is nothing wrong with the word, “Allah” as the best Arabic word to translate Elohim in the OT and Theos in the NT for Arabic speakers and some other Muslims who don’t have a better word in their language that communicates the eternal, Sovereign, Holy, Good, Creator of all things; the doctrine of who Allah is in Islam is wrong, since you admit that the Trinity and Deity of Christ and Deity of the Holy Spirit is wrong.

The Roman Catholics were very sloppy in their wording of this; (since it contradicts the Trinity and Deity of Christ) and this has also caused a lot of Roman Catholics to view Vatican 2 (that document is part of Vatican 2 Council) and post Vatican 2 theology as heretical and Popes after 1958 – beginning with John XXIII and Paul VI (the 2 who started and continued Vatican 2 Council) .

What it seems that they meant was that Muslims are Monotheists, and have a similar idea of God as the Jews and what a surface level understanding of the OT revelation as was at the time, without the NT revelation, although there are hints in the OT to the Deity of the Messiah and the Trinity.

Or it could mean that the Roman Catholic Church clearly contradicted itself, but won’t admit it, on a doctrinal issue; and therefore the whole claim of being the one true Church and infallible and the infallibility of a Pope – all of that comes crashing down.

That is why the Traditionalists Roman Catholics see John XXIII and beyond as heretical Popes.

    Response:

You have to prove that these doctrines are not wrong not just assume these beliefs to be true.

And if this is the logic, why don’t you people declare that you worship a different God from the God of the Jews as the Jews also believe that the Trinity is wrong?

But hardly will you be that consistent!

What you people failed to see is that the Jews, Christians and Muslims could refer to the same God but differ in THIER conceptions of Him.
