Happy Ra’sus-Sanah and Rosh Hashanah!

Salaam, Shalom:

Wish all of our Muslim and Jewish friends a Happy and Healthy New Year!

This year Muslim and Jewish New Year happens to be at the same time. Let’s continue the journey of reconciliation and peace….

Muslim New Year

The Hijri (Islamic Calendar) New Year begins on the First Day of the month of Muharram, which this year will be on October 2, 2016 marking the beginning of a new Islamic calendar year 1438 A.H., also known as Ra’sus-Sanah (head of the year).

The first Islamic year began in 622 AD which marks the migration of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Mecca to Medina, known as the Hijrah. Since the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, Muharram moves from year to year when compared with the Gregorian calendar. It is considered to be the most sacred of all the months, excluding Ramadan. In this important month, significant events took place throughout history. Many individuals fast on the 9th, 10th, and 11th day of the month of Muharram.

Jewish New Year

Rosh Hashanah is translated as “head of the year” and is the beginning of the Jewish New Year. This is considered to be a time of devotion and prayer to the Almighty to decree a long, spiritually enriching life, as well as good health and prosperity to all. Rosh Hashanah will be observed this year from sunset, Sunday October 2 through sundown, Tuesday October 4, 2016 marking the beginning of year 5777. During this time period, the Jewish religion strictly prohibits many activities such as going to work, writing, turning lights on or off, riding in a car and carrying items such as a cell phone, driver’s license, credit cards and money.

Note: when the Prophet Muhammad pbuh moved to Madinah he found the Jewish people fasting the 9th of Muharram, the first month of Islamic calendar. He asked them on why they fast the day? The Jewish answered that that is the day when Allah saved Moses and his people from Fir’aun (Pharoh). Prophet Muhammad responded: we Muslims have the right to follow Moses even more. So please do fast the 9th of Muharram. Later he added the 10th of Muharram too.

This shows how Islam and Judaism are connected to its origin: Common God of the heaven and the earth.

  1. “During this time period, the Jewish religion strictly prohibits many activities such as going to work, writing, turning lights on or off, riding in a car and carrying items such as a cell phone, driver’s license, credit cards and money.”

Actually, only one or two Jewish streams forbid these things: Orthodox Judaism and perhaps Masorti/Conservative Judaism. All other streams within Judaism allow many if not all of the above mentioned activities.

    • they happen to be the only streams that believe in the torah and its Laws. So for all it matters, its the Torah who said it’s Rosh HaShana the same Torah said that you can’t work on that day…

” Note: when the Prophet Muhammad pbuh moved to Madinah he found the Jewish people fasting the 9th of Muharram, the first month of Islamic calendar.”
Actually it’s the 10th day of Muharram ( Ashura’) عاشوراء which means the 10th.
With regard to the reason why the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) fasted on the day of ‘Ashura’ and urged the people to do likewise is mentioned in the hadith narrated by al-Bukhaari (1865) from Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with him), who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to Madinah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of ‘Ashura’. He said, “What is this?” They said, “This is a good day, this is the day when Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy and Moses fasted on this day.” He said, “We are closer to Moses than you.” So he fasted on this day and told the people to fast. ”

“In gratitude to Allah, so that is we fast on this day.” In Muslim.

Also, it had been obligatory before the fasting of Ramadan was ordered . Then it became optional, yet it’s highly recommended.
The fasting of the 9th day is recommended to distinguish our fasting from the jewish one, yet it’s ok to fast the 10th only.

Finally, muslims have the right, and they closer to the prophets of Allah than any people on this earth.

  3. It’s the very same religion, so no surprise at all

  4. Nope. Psalm 83 is about here and now. Read Ezekiel 38 and 39. The fall of Islam.

You actually prove they are different religions. According to the bible ishmael is not a prophet. He is not a child of the promise. God calls himself the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob.

Anyone who thinks a prophet could arise from Arabia is clueless as to what Judaism teaches.

    • Psalm 83 was a moment in history, and regarding Ezekiel 38 and 39, on the contrary it is not about Islam we recognise this as the fall of idol worship trinitarian colonial power.

Prophet Muhammad truly was prophetic successor to Prophet Moses. They undoubtedly share many parallels. The exodus of the Israelites from Egypt is similar to the migration (hijra) made by the first Arab Muslims.

    • Mohammed is a prophet like Joseph Smith.

    • Was Joseph Smith taught monotheism? No.

He taught a form of polytheistic belief that humans may eventually become deified and become partakers in the divine nature eg. similar to trinitarianism only that the latter strangely enough limit it to “three” personality.

      or

Had Josep Smith ever been in exile and then lead his community of believers who now are the most actively praying to One and True God and the most God fearing people in the world which soon become the world most professed monotheistic community in the world? No.

      So you are wrong.

  5. Sorry Eric, the satanic verses proves Mohammad was a false prophet

    • When muslims read the Qur’an or study our religious text we must recite the Ta’awwuz or / Isti’adzah as follows:

      أَعُوْذُبِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيْمِ

      which means

I seek refuge from Allah from Satan the accursed

This is  based from the Qur’an injunction:

      فَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ الْقُرْآنَ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

So when you recite the Qur’an, [first] seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed

Do you think Satan will tell people to invoke God’s name to rebuke himself?

  6. This story have no authentic chain whatsoever. There’s None!
It was not mentioned by the earliest biography of the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم which ( is wriiten by Musa ibn U’qbah) .
However, what’s Christians’ problem with this story ?
After all, you believe that your almighty ” god” has been attempted by satan.

  7. Eric,

Millions of animals migrate every year- does that make them prophets too?

    • Oh!
Have not you noticed that your god is a ( lamb ) according to your scripture?
What’s about the holy spirit? Yes ! It was a dove!

By the way many of animals including ( lambs & doves) got sacrificed by Israelites too, yet they have never believed that those animala were gods for them.

    • I hope this is a sincere question,

No. Because no animal were given comprehensive law code of life from God, no animal perform miracles in defeating the enemy of God and no animals ever recorded as being accepted as the leader of a community of monotheistic believers.

      Thank you.
