My guess is that Infantilizing the African people by the Christian church, through treating them like disobedient intractable children psychologically conditions them to helplessly identify with and depend on the Church in the same way an abused child remains attached to its abusive parent.
Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them. Proverbs13:24
In addition, a White Christian Preacher beating Black African Congregants with a stick would seem to be quite symbolic of Christianity’s immoral support of Imperialist Colonialism in Africa, and its turning a blind eye to the mistreatment of African people over the centuries, both in Africa and the Americas.
